bicykillgaz
Hi I'm possibly getting a 50mm objective scope for my .22lr but want to know what the lowest mounts are I can gt away with, I know normally high mounts would be recommended but on a 50mm Scope but could I get away with mediums. I find it an un natural position to have my head so high but want a larger objective or light gain at dusk/dawn and under the lamp. steve_b_wales
You should get away with using medium height mounts. Why not take your rifle/scope, like I did, to an RFD and see if they will let you try some mounts on your rifle. Most of them have old sets available, and you can then buy new off them, once you've found out the correct ones. Steve.
Vince Green
AFAIK there is no universal definition of high or medium. Its try it and see
Sharpshooter.123
As Steve said about rfd's. You should be ok with medium tho mate

The most important one of Steve's words above is "once": Nothing is so inexpensive as getting it right first time. Be careful what scope you buy though, just remember that (for a 50 objective) going much, if any, over 7 mag particularly at night starts to defeat the object. bicykillgaz
Sorry I probably should have said I've not got the scope yet but was going to buy the mounts in advance so as soon as it arrived I could be out to zero straight away. Cheers for the answers though Gary

I am hoping to scrape enough together to afford ME's docter off here but failling that that I'll get either a leupold or sightron I want something half decent for a change, as for mag I would use it on 6-7 mag for hunting maybe higher if I fancied a bit of paper punching. Atb gary That's that sorted then as paper punching I would imagine would be daytime. Do what Steve said though and get the scope (horse) before the mounts (cart). Redgum
You could always go 44mm objective, they will almost certainly fit on medium mounts. As for 50mm objectives your much better having a 40mm of good quality than a cheap 50mm objective. My zeiss 40mm objective scope is better than my Nikon Monarch 50mm in low light. I thought Doctor scopes were supposed to be quite tasty. Is that not right - they certainly cost a few pence?

My current scope is a 6x44 with 30mm tube sat on low mounts which leave just enough for me to fit my rubber bikini covers on I was hoping for the same effect on the 50mm objective I thought Doctor scopes were supposed to be quite tasty. Is that not right - they certainly cost a few pence? Docter scopes are excellent quality hence the prices, I had a docter 6x40 and it was the best I've ever owned clarity wise but I didn't like the thick posts on the ret so i got rid of it and got my optimate 6x44 not quite as clear but very very good for the money and the added bonus of a fine ret so bigger sight picture, mine was as clear as my old mans s&b 8x56 Hungarian in daylight/woods as far as my eyes could tell, not sure about dusk/dawn or under a lamp though.
