Jimjim
Hi everyone I have just got my first 2 ferrets, I have a Albino hob and a badger jill, they are both 2 months old and are brother and sister. I would be greatfull for any hints and tips on getting them used to me as they are still fond of biting. Thanks Jim
henry d
Keep on handling them Also a little spit on your palm tends to work, seriously, offer it up to them like a drink and they will sniff and lick at it.It seems to calm them and get them used to you and your smell. Cranfield
Handle them as much as possible, don't drop, or squeeze them, if they nip, just keep stroking them and ignore it. Never let your hand hover over them, or make fast movements near them. Be positive and gentle when you pick them up, don't snatch at them. Imagine how big and threatening your hand looks like to a small ferret. Let them sniff at your hand (the spit idea is a good one), they will then recognise your scent. I always make soft squeaking noises when I approach the hutches, to warn them I'm coming, especially when feeding. I also do this when I want them to come out of an earth.....it works sometimes. henry d
Yes but at this time of year you have to be careful of flies/maggots and the meat going off quickly
Cranfield
If you can get fresh rabbit easily, then feed them some (I don't believe it helps their rabbit hunting ability one jot). Cheap pieces of chicken, pigeon, or any other fresh raw meat is fine. As is tinned cat food (can make them a bit loose) and the dry foods. When feeding fresh meat, don't leave it in the run too long in the heat. They won't eat it and it will stink, also make sure they have plenty of cool fresh water, they seem to drink more when eating raw meat. Ferret Master
Hi, What brand of dry meal is it? FM
lurcherboy
Well done on your aquisition Jim. I have recently been given two jills from a fellow member of Pigeon Watch, Patsmash he is a top man, and was also worried about nipping. I didn't know of the spit trick but a mate of mine told me to let them smell my hands and breath through the wire for a couple of minutes before handling. Obviously without the guiness breath I have got them to use a litter tray in the last few days as well, I must be on a roll Good luck LB

Ferretboy111
Certainly good food, make sure you dont get it wet as i made the mistake last year by mositening the food for 2 kits and it stained their teeth. Alex
