barney 66
Just lately i have been favouring my .17hmr for rabbits and fox due to its weight and ease of carrying and shooting out of a vehicle it is an Anschutz 1517 with an Lei mod, great piece of kit,my .222 is a ruger M77 mk2 with a predator compact mod,i,m not sure of the weight but its heavy for me to lug aroundfor a night,it also doesnt help the fact a have a cyst in my wrist thats been removed three times somewhere around the joint and carrying a rifle causes this to swell so the lighter the better. I had a look on the internet and cant seem to find a list of rifle weights anywhere so if anybody could point me in the direction of a lightweigh .222 preferably thumbhole like my .17 that would be great, Thanks Chris

casts_by_fly
You don't get thumbhole stocks on light barrels. You might have to pick one or go custom. A cz with a sporter barrel at 18" is pretty light and a nice walkaround gun. I bought my dad a 221 in that setup and it is fantastic. HDAV
What about a bulbous straight pull there is a GSG5 I think should be light and short for use in a vehicle?

HDAV
The gsg5 is a .22LR MP5 clone some one told me of a .222/.223 straight pull that was being imported into the uk there are Steyr AUG .223 clones in straight pull a bit tackleberry but ideal for use in confined space and with composite fittings light weight. Have a good search AUG info http://www.gunmart.net/gun_review/steyr_aug_z_sp/ http://www.fultonsofbisley.com/shop/firearms/service-and-sniper-rifles/761-f1742-steyr-aug-straight-pull-223.html There are a few previous threads on straight pull assault rifle variants some are bulpup some not Not cheap but http://www.snipersystems.co.uk/id7.html but worth a look and a call Edited May 26, 2012 by HDAV

Silver-fox885
You probably won't get much lighter than this. http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Steyr-Mannlicher_Rifle_Ultra-light_For-Sale_071206162032011

kent
firstly its not just the Gun, scopes, moderators and bipods add up. Have a look at a CZ 527 American and team it up with a 3-9 x 40 with a 1" tube in alloy. This CZ comes with a set of mounts in the price and i should consider loosing the moderator if possible and adding a sling. What you realy must avoid is the rifles that are not dedicated small calibre actions

barney 66
Update on exact rifle weight, weighed on a set of laboratory scales,Ruger m77 mk2 rifle + bolt Zeiss 8x56t ir & sling is 4307 grams mod is predator8 compact with neopreene cover is 622 grams making atotal of 4929 grams on Zeiss sight it says scope is 522grams so this makes rifle + sling at 3785 grams. My question is,is this classed as heavy or not or is it the scope and mod making it feel heavy, just weighed sling at 138 grams so with taking that off puts rifle, bolt and mounts at 3647 grams, Thanks Chris

barney 66
Not a Clue i work in old money as far as gun weights go Yeah and me,but that was all the scales weighed in,so in old money all up ready to shoot 10.8lbs,or 8.03lbs rifle with scope mounts,is this classed as heavy or not? if i can get something preferably with a thumbhole stock nice and short barrel and save a bit of weight,i may put in for a variation, look forward to your input, Thanks Chris

So i guess 8-10lb but balance makes things easier or harder to actually handle. McMillan do a nice lighterweight composite thumbhole stock BTW, though pricey
