Chris B.12345 Posted June 7, 2012 Report Share Posted June 7, 2012 My span is 14 week old and he is fetching everything i throw for him and hes bring it back to the whistle with no problems and gives it to me in my hand when i say dead. Took him fo rhis first lesson hearing shotgun fireand he diddnt shake or winper at all praisied him after the first one then they did it in 10 then 20's shots and he was not bothered with the noise and praised him after when they had done and he surprized me after the first one well chuffed with him. just the hands stop,left,right an dback to start him on now. ferguson_tom Posted June 8, 2012 Report Share Posted June 8, 2012 (edited) Glad others with more experience said it before me, dont push him too hard at a young age they are only a baby still so spend the time just playing and bonding. I rushed my collie too fast and problem was he was a smart dog but soon got bored after a few months and also i rushed so didnt make sure he did everything perfectly now i have spent a lot of time ironing out all the little faults. My new springer pup is now 7 months and only just starting what you are doing now, at that age all i did was throw socks, and have her sitting (not for very long) and recalling on the whistle. I learnt the hard way about training a dog to quickly, my collie is good but my springer will be a lot better dog. No probs with doing a bit younger, this is just too much too soon. work up from banging dishes, clapping hands then work up to .22 short blanks at distance, then slowly closer, then longs etc,etc up to 12 bores fired close. But only if the dogs 100% used to and ok with the rest, i shouldn't try the 12 on even a very confident pup till after 6mnths or older personally as there is no point to it it wont be seeing the field for many months after that at the soonest Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BRYAN3 Posted June 8, 2012 Report Share Posted June 8, 2012 Get him out in the car bonding and socialising with as many things as possible. Other dogs,cats, tame rabbits and livestock. Make sure you do some retreives from water before you ask him to and make lots of on-land retreives you're self so he knows that not all retreives are for him. Otherwise he could become pre-emptive and start running in. Also must learn that other dogs are sometimes retreiving and he must not snatch from others. Yes I have made mistakes. Bryan. A better way of getting a pup used to loud bangs is to use a metal feed bowl and bang it on the floor when feeding. I do this with every pup I train.
