tbox
So just got back from holiday and my Mrs is most upset to see that the bunnies have been going to work good and proper on the garden. So need some advise on the right tool for the job as I haven't used an air gun since I was a nipper about 25 yrs ago and am to all intents and purposes a complete beginner when it comes to air guns. Criteria are: 1 needs to be ambidextrous or L/H 2 leaning towards a springer rather than pcp - just because it looks less technical and doesnt require suplementary equipment but open to opinions /thoughts on that assumption. 3 needs to be reliable/accurate to 30meters ( that's how far I estimate the main scene of crime to be from where I intend to be!) 4 non FAC Any other thoughts and considerations I should take into account gratefully received.. Not often I get the Mrs actively pushing me to make a gun purchase so c'mon guys... Let's make the most of it!! Cheers in advance Jim. -Mongrel-
An accurate one. If you are a relatively skilled shooter then you will probably get reasonable accuracy from a springer. If not you may struggle, either way the chances are you will be more accurate with a PCP. The accuracy you will need to achieve is to be able to consistently hit a 10 pence at your given distance. Something like a second hand BSA Ultra seems to fit your criteria relatively cheaply.
MM
bsa lightning. cheap as chips.
FalconFN
Depends on how much you have to spend, but Weihrauch, Air Arms or Theoben will not let you down.
chrisjpainter
sounds like you can measure it exactly! Springers are much cheaper and take a lot less upkeep, so if you're not going to make a hobby of air rifles, then something like a BSA lightening XL, or any of the HW range would definitely be worth looking at. The air arms TX200/prosport would be good too. most springers come in ambidextrous flavour anyway, so you shouldn't have a problem with that. have a play about, but any of the ones mentioned will do the job! My personal favourite would be the HW95, but that's because it was my first rifle and I'm sentimental! The lightening will undoubtedly be the cheapest version and is, buy most accounts a good workhorse! Word of warning on the HW80, they can creep up over the magic 12ft/lb mark so if you go for a second hand one, best get it run over a chrono before hand! tbox
Thanks guys for some great feedback here. So if I am reading this right the trade off between stringers vs pcp's is that springers are easier to set-up, less technical, but require more skill to be accurate consistently. PCP's are easier to use and generally more accurate, but require more setup work and supplementary equipment. Is that about fair? Budget question is a good one.. I would ideally like like to keep it around the 400 quid mark for a whole set up. If I were to go the pcp route would I be able to get anything in that price range and how much would I need to budget for bottles, connectors etc? Cheers again Jim. -Mongrel-
You'll buy a PCP complete with scope and filling gear for 400 quid. You keep saying PCP's require more set up. Apart from having to refill the air reserve, there isn't anything else extra to set up. You'll have to zero a scope, but you'd do that on both. PCP's don't recoil noticeably, as such they are more forgiving of less than perfect technique. A springer does recoil purely due to the inertia of the moving spring, to get consistent accuracy you need a good hold and technique, they need to be allowed to recoil but your hold must be consistent for consitent results. As a new shooter I'd push you toward PCP's. More expensive for sure but easier to shoot, particularly as you intend to shoot live quarry and clean kills rather than injureing them is desirable. If I can get a full pcp set up in budget then I think that might be a better solution for me. Either way I will certainly make sure I punch a lot of paper before I take on the bunnies! Chr15j
Go for a theiben fenman. Ambi stock break barrel with gas ram, I can outshoot my pcp with this gun, it's amazing. And well in budget. No I'm not selling mine ever.... You won't even pry it from my dead rotting fingers!!!
chrisjpainter
for that money you'd definitely be able to get a complete rig for PCP, if you're willing to put the hours in hunting them down! You'll be able to get a BSA Ultra for that sort of cash, perhaps an Air Arms S200, maybe an S410. The Hatsan AT 10 44 seems pretty popular as well

Have a look at GUNSTAR and GUNTRADER loads on there every day. Look at hatsan AT44 10 shot PCP with air gauge and Silencer and very accurate. There`s one on gunstar only a few weeks old for £250. Falcon FN19 very light and accurate PCP.
