  11. I don't know what sort of engineer you are but I can assure you that submarines carry many "random" water pipes inside the pressure hull , they are for control of the ballast and trim tanks so therefore need to be readily repaired or isolated in case of damage whilst on patrol , which may occur whilst submerged and under depth charge attack . If they were in the free flood casing outside the pressure hull and got damaged whilst submerged how would you know which section to isolate or bypass , or indeed how would you then be able to affect a life saving repair if you could not surface due to hostile action . Ballast pipes and trim tank pipes are/were tested to 1.5 times maximum dive pressure which if the submarine had crash dived to max safe dive depth and then came under close depth charge attack this test pressure could well be exceeded and cause a burst joint due to the concussive force of a nearby under water explosion this seems a rambling explanation but its the best that I can put together Harrypen (ex R.N. 12. Link comes back to this pigeon watch advert NOT Gooutdoor
  13. Well put Zapp,,,,,,,, whilst I am mainly a reader on here it seems that the same 6 or 8 protagonists on here delight in stirring the pot and then just get more and more belligerent until the thread gets shut down ,,,,,, then they move on to the next stir with impunity .... You can almost bet on it well past time to hold an accounting harrypen
  14. investigate ENELOOP rechargeable batteries ,,, these are rechargeable low self discharge pencells I think you will find they are guaranteed to maintain at least 75% of their charge for 1 year when unused in any suitable torch or in storage hth harrypen edited to state ,,,,, I have just checked Wikee The 3rd generation eneloop battery will loose less than 10% in their first year of charge and 1-4% of thereafter they can be put into use immediately because of this property On AMAZON a pack of 4 aa pencells . 1900Mah are approx. £7..10p ,,, you will of course require a charger during use but not to charge them when unused
  15. The biggest money stretcher for driving instructors was the invention of "dual controls" ,,, I had 8 lessons with my first instructor when he informed me I would be driving on my own ,, I asked him if he was going to get out of the car ? No he said Im not going use my foot pedals .... I quit driving with him that day after finding I did not and was not using the clutch correctly and had the worst driving lesson of the eight with continually stalling the engine and braking late !!! My new instructor took me on a 2 hour driving lesson to teach me to balance the brakes , clutch and accelerator . I put in for and passed my driving test 2 weeks later My first driving instructor was talking about another 10 lessons at 10 shillings per lesson (my wages at the time were £2 .10sh, per week) in 1965

  18. And so does johnny come lately know it all think that if I now give up smoking because it may kill me everything will be right with the world I THINK NOT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, And I wont try to preach to biggots anymore Especially whilst you drive around in your particulate spewing old jalopy of a landrover and shoot lead shot all over the place And I don't give a What you think of me
  19. Im willing to bet that most of the above posts are written by rabid ex-smokers .... No one passed legislation 30 odd years ago to stop me having to weld galvanised metal because it would destroy my lungs (which it has) ..... no one told me in the 1960s that I could not go down into the bowels of a ship where the lagging had just been removed and the dust was floating around and I was breathing it in and it would lodge in my lungs (which it has) ...... no one told me that whilst I was inside the bowels of a ship that the caulkers and rivitters were outside the same ship hammering on it for 8hrs a day would destroy my hearing (which it has) ... No one at that time told me not to use air ratchet tools for long periods of time because I would suffer from damaged joints which I do,,,, No one told me then that lifting and shifting loads over 25 kgs would ruin my back (which it has) But all this pales into insinifigance when self opinionated little ******tell me that the fact I smoke has recently been found to MAY harm others ..... 40 years ago when my kids were little all this ****** was unknown and I happily smoked around/ near my children and that health would be ruined (and it has not),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Wake up and smell the roses folks (if you can because massive chain of commercial grabbers haven't decided they wont stock smelly ones ) live life and prosper
  20. Why not buy/use a cheap woodworkers marking out gauge ? you can file/grind the marking pin to a knife edge , you can set it to any length and place the brass bottom to the stop and rotate the cartridge against the blade and cut the unwanted plastic off ,,,, infinately adjustable as well !!!!!!
  21. If your happy with your "steam powered " Toshiba except for its lack of ability to hold a charge ,,, why not just invest in a new battery and charger for the one you have,,,,,, probably be able to do that for 1/10th of the cost of a new computer ,,, unless you WANT to lay out at least £300+ for a new one
