jacksdad
Well, its been dry sofar in Sunny Oldham, even a hint of blue in the sky Hows the weather with you today? 'St. Swithin's day if thou dost rain For forty days it will remain St. Swithin's day if thou be fair For forty days 'twill rain nae mair.' For our younger viewers, it is said than rain today will bring 40 days of constant rain, dry then the opposite....... Its also said that apples grow best if it rains today, so maybe we can all make loads of cider, get ****** and forget all about it! Kes
Did anyone see the BBC explanation of St Swithins day today? Apparently Swithin was an anglo saxon bishop in the 900s and asked to be buried in the rain - so they buried him outside. Later as he was canonised they wanted to bring his remains into the church but on the day they began it rained and it kept on raining for 40 days (problems with the jet stream) so the monks took this to be a sign that St Swithin wanted to remain outside - which is where his remains still are. However a legend grew up that - you know the rest. Also, the Met office have checked the records for 50 seperate years and on NO occasion has the legend been borne out by the recorded weather. SO popular country myth with no substance but for me a rather pleasant country saying which may be a very rough early guide to the position of the Jet Stream in early summer - damn clever those Angles and Saxons ! ack-ack
dry here but i'm not sure it'll last the day. Same as that. Decided to put another load of washing out just in case though. Clothes always feel better once they've had a good rain soaking on the line. Dunno how long the washing line will hold up for it if does rain though, it will weigh a ton! Kes
Who would have thought it,Ack-Ack is domesticated yes but using the rain on the line rather than a washing machine means he isnt totally domesticated !!!
walshie
Maybe we had the 40 days of rain FIRST, so that will cancel it out if it rains today?

WoodyPopper
Sunny and warm all day here today. But after all, it IS my birthday and I'm wearing a penguin suit, bought for me by my children. If you visit Winchester Cathedral, you can see where St Swithun is buried. Lots of other dead Anglo Saxons too, if that's your thing. jacksdad
Its just rained a few spots But it hasn't wet the ground at all, so alls not lost just yet: the farmers round here are clinging to any hope of some dry, old wives tale or not, I bet they are all hoping and praying! And I agree, Jockland doesn't count as it is permanent rainy season oop there Edited July 15, 2012 by jacksdad
