Townie
We're off to California in a couple of weeks, driving from San Diego to San Francisco. Does anyone know if it's possible to visit a public range to have a play while Mrs T does something more suitable for the ladies?
Muddy Funker
I went to Florida a few years ago just after the rules changed. Some woman went to a pay and shoot range and blatted her son in the head, not sure if she then did the same to herself. They stopped turn up and shoot not long after if I remember correctly. Not sure about Cali?

kiffy
my brother has a place in florida, last time he was over a couple of months ago he called in a range which is quite close to his house to see if he could have a go.. they took him through the range of handguns he could use and let him handle them. they where happy for him to take the gun of his choise and have a go but as hes not used one before he wanted to go with an instructor who wasnt there at the time... but hes back over in a few weeks and he said hes going for it then
Bleeh
Your best bet is to phone a range you want to go to in advance, and talk about your situation. I tried this a while back and had issues, mostly because a lot of people need you to be vouched for, others have courses they want you to complete, or be members, etc.
majordisorder
There's a couple of places in SF I go to: Jackson Arms About a mile from the Airport in the not so nice "South San Francisco". Pretty good range with a nice selection of Glocks and the like. Only problem, you need to be with someone else if you're hiring, i.e. you cannot tip up on your own probably for the reasons other have mentioned. They do (or did) a hand gun course for beginners which I did a few years back where you get some instruction in .22 have a bit of a shoot and then grab an armful of fun stuff to shoot. Well worth the $80 I think it cost. If you fancy a bit of Clay shooting there's Coyote Valley. It's up in the hills just south of San Jose, a couple of the nearby towns have some great outlet shopping so you could drop off the misses and take a drive up there. Very relaxed if not a tad expensive HTH
