20 minutes lamping

Just thought I'd share my nights adventure with you, and a cautionary tale of gun safety.

Took the Sako out tonight for a quick shine around one of my permissions as the mower was out this week and it's the first time I've been able to go out at night for ages. With the grass gone I was hoping the rabbits would be about.

As soon as I entered the first field I shone around and caught sight of a foxes bright eye shine and thoughtbid have a go at squeaking it in.

I crouched against the stone wall to my right and put the caller in my mouth and gave a quick squeak.

With this the fox came running toward me in a very naive way and I could see it was about 3/4 size.

It just kept coming and stopped about 30 yards away looking in my direction.

As I squeezed the trigger it dropped straight down with one eye.

That is the end of the good part of the night...

I left the fox where it fell, which was only 50yds from my car and headed off around the edge of the field.

I came to a hole in the stone wall and decided to have a shine over the wall into the next field.

Where the hole is there is an old gate to stop the horses from getting through and there are stones from the wall all around the hole.

Well then, I held the gate to steady myself as I stepped over an awkward stone only to find that the gate had about 2 foot of movement in it...

(It's worth pointing out here that safety conscious as I am the gun was not loaded at this point)

As the gun was slung on my shoulder, the momentum took it a bit further than I would have liked and it made contact with the stone

Luckily (?) only the wood took the hit and the barrel, mod and (leupold) scope are miraculously untouched!

The scratches are deeper than it looks, the stock might need a strip down and refurb - I only did the ******* thing last month!

Oh well, at least it has cost me nothing but my own time, catching the scope, now that would have been another story.:no:

Dont need rubbing back to fix that just oil the effected bits. The damage is just part of owning a working rifle with a wood stock and in a few years you wont remember that cub being shot without it :good:

:stupid: a bit of oil and you're away, whats the point in getting an amazing finish when it's likely to get scratched again ???

Just as an update it gets worse...

The gun is looking healthy again after a quick touch up this morning.

Right that's that out of the way, now onto my rotten luck...

Got my knife nice and sharp to skin the fox to brush up on my tanning skills since its been a while.

Long story cut very short I cut my finger quite deep and Went to GP where I have just had a tetanus shot and have been sent to the walk-in centre in Loughborough for stitches.

Just waiting to be called in now...

UPDATE:

Because I'm off work all this week anyway she glued it back together.

Cant do the washing up for a week! What a shame :sly:

But seriously, no, thankfully it's my left hand and there was no nerve, tendon or muscle damage!

It was bloody deep and gaping but funnily enough didn't hurt. I was a bit worried about the lack of pain but I still have full sensation in my finger so all things considered It was quite an accurate incision!

  •
  • Gun intact
  • Finger intact
  • Sense of humour intact

I would say that is a fair result.

This is also a good example of gun safety as your little slip could have ended up with you (or maybe someone else) notifying us of a far worse outcome.

Thanks for sharing.
