I have a Onkyo 606 AV receiver - it had good reviews at time but must say I am not overly impressed - might be my small wall mounted speakers- I don't know - As said AVForums is good for info -- keep it coming I am interested to see what is about these days.

It does in my House Ive got Marantz and Technics seperates and a Garrad Deck driven by a 79 B2 yamaha amp ( £800 in 1979)! to two pairs of 1980's Kef speakers.. All aquired from my Dad over the years as he has upgraded. He is a real Hi Fi buff and wouldnt have all this wireles digital cd stuff...Hes like me and likes to see something going round...( thats why neither of us fly unless its a turbo prop.!)

In fact Ive just had some old Vinyl on earlier including both sides of Frampton comes alive.... crank up the amp and away I go back to the 70,s when there was real music to be enjoyed.

The sound quality is probably not quite as good as modern digital but atmospherically its much better.

Ps.. a local collector / dealer offerd me £400 for the amp alone recently so it must be quite good ! I dont know much about these things does anyone have any info on it.?

Im a bit old fashioned when it comes to audio equipment bought mine in the late sixties and still going strong

thorens turntable with sure v15 pickup, sansui valve amp and recently added kef reference 11 speakers,

cant see any reason to upgrade, i worked for many years in the sound industry we alway had spendor speakers in the studio. if you see any for sale at a boot fair grab them as they are the dbs,

TBH Onkyo were better before they got well known I've been using them for 7+ years the x5 series was when the rot set in the NR1001 was good. the SR801 is stunning i have a 653 Still make decent mid range kit £600+ Yamaha top end are good but its all about matching the speakers, B&W dont work well with Onkyo, Denon have had some issues recently and MArantz new stuff is good but not cheap.

A good pair of speakers from 1970 is still a good pair of speakers, a good amplifier from 1970 is still a good amplifier, Spendor were still around 5 years ago ish, Brittish hifi isnt was it was but there is some good kit out there for little money if you know what your looking for all this digital nonsense is better its cheaper......Just watch for turntables that you cant get carts for or are silly money when buying used.....

I've got a Rega turntable and some Wharfedale speakes I've have for thirty years and they still sound superb.

I picked up an old ratty pair of Wharfedales of late 70s early 80's vintage from the local hospice shop. I wasn't expecting much for £1.50 but I assure you they will go up to eleven. Great bits of kit

Wharfdales are a great all round speaker.

You can't beat a set of "active diamonds" plugged into a PC.

All this warmth of vinyl nonsense is funny - if it was that great everyone would still be buying vinyl, but no, technology and progress has made stuff better as can sometimes happen with technology and progress, and so vinyl is there to keep sad people who unecessarily spent fortunes on absolete audio equipment happy :yay:

LOL very well put Mungler :D It always amazes me when i hear of folks (my mate is one) who has just spent a FORTUNE on a turntable to listen to his old vinyl collection!! Yeah great audio really helps make those scratches sound crisper :good:

Whilst digital is missing something for those really in the know with perfect listening rooms, I reckon the vast majority off us get by with CD quality or dare I say it iPod/digital streaming!! Lets face it most of the time the kids are running about screaming their wee heads of and if thats not the case the rest of us are deaf having just shot 150 cartridges at those pesky pigeons :D

They do say that the old stuff with glass valves if you can find one gives a much softer sound with good speakers I have got a stack of records but nothing to play them on good equipment is so expensive today and cheep stuff is as it says on the box cheep and sounds tiny.

Your not wrong there, I run a system with valves. I was running Roksan pre and power amps until a local dealer gave me a £300 valve amp and to be honest it blew my £1500 transistor amp set up away. It wasn't perfect, so then had the pleasure of auditioning several high end valve amps.

I am now listening to Rogue Audio Tempest valve amp, Abbey Road interconnect, CEC TL1500z belt drive CD player, Audiotruth " The Forest" speaker wire into Castle Harlech floorstanders.

Absolutely magical, if only I could get rid of this bloody tinnitus.

For those of you who are into your HiFi, Google emporiumshed. Here's a link if thats allowed. Apologies if it's not, http://stores.ebay.co.uk/EMPORIUMHIFI

In November 1983 my boss gave me 2 Leak Delta 30 amps, a turntable (can't remember the name) with an SME arm to which I fitted a Shure M75EJ type 2 cartridge, 2 side speakers and a centre speaker that were hand made for him, the sound quality was sublime, but not to loud, it all got stolen from outside the house when I was moving.

Tawts
