ricky green
my 222 was first rifle i had, shots loads of fox with it as above posts very good to 200+,but in all fairness most of my foxes shot well under that.with a mod you can spot your shots most of the time.I have seen foxes drop to mine before i have heard the thump.so to say i would recomend thats a YES.. most of the time bullet dont exit so safer in that respect.i reload my own 50g Vmax .also have 243 but use the 222 all the time.. :good:
Devon Fox
My 1st rifle was a 222 - shot hundreds of foxes with it, deadly accurate and easy to shoot, I only sold it because I need to take care of deer as well so went for a 243 for fox & occasional deer. I regret selling my triple now, but I must admit I would go for a 223 for the ease of sourcing gun and a selection of rounds. You would not regret buying a triple, mine wasn't even moderated and it shot a dream.
Bewsher500
what did you get?? colin picked up a lovely example of a BRNO Fox Model 2 just about finished a complete restoration job on it, refinished wood, reblued metal, 3" chop, screwcut and recrown, polished bolt raceway, reprofiled bolt handle. had a ****** of a job finding 30mm mounts for it without selling a kidney going to shoot it and see how it goes before I look at pillar bedding it. doubt it will need it
wildfowler.250
I'VE never used a .222 but a friend has been using one for years and says its the sweetest round there is. Some very nice S/H guns for sale too!

jamie g
222 is a great calibre i use to have one. and a shooting mate of mine still does. very accurate not to loud and low recoil. [ not thta the other 22 cf's recoil a lot anyway. 222 rifles can be picked up for next to nothing
al4x
If you want to spectate on some reloading prior to doing some Colin let me know, at that point had you gone .223 you could have reloaded your own here
colin lad
thanks al4x will prob take you up on that offer as its something i may get into next year i went 222 as the second hand guns are quite cheep to pick up and will only be using for fox so not too many rounds per year but after looking into reloading it looks like it may be quite cheep to reload for, if it is it may have to come out on a few long range crow sessions, paperwork went off today so fingers crossed they dont put a mentor condition on it as i dont know anyone round here with cf may have to ask some of the kind pw members from sunny herts??? colin Edited September 3, 2012 by colin lad
al4x
to be fair all you would need are some dies so not the end of the world, if just foxes then unless you just load with someone elses gear its very unlikely to save any money. However once its "just foxes" you then have "just zeroing" "just nipping out for a play with the rifles" and a few other reasons that seem to amount to more use than you think Costs vary little between the two same bullets a little less powder and same primers so really nothing to make much difference. Now they have merged Herts and Beds hopefully sing from the same sheet and certainly with HMR for a few years I didn't get a mentor condition on .223 so you may find you are fine. JMart
I have used a .222 for the last 30 years. As a < 250yd foxing calibre its superb. Slap a decent moderator in the rifle and its a first class peri urban deer calibre too.

oz gun
Gday, Hi there, I'm an old pigeon shooter that moved to Australia 17yrs ago. I swapped my shotgun shooting to rifle's. The 50,000ac staiton (farm) I live and work on has plenty of foxes, pigs and other's to shoot. I went a Sako .222 and reload my own ammo using Noslar Ballistic Tips in 55gr with ADI powder at 21gr. I zero one inch high at 100 meters (not yards) and that gives me around 2 - 3" drop out at 200 meters. I do shoot out to 300 meters and I have had some grate shots. I got this rifle second hand and its a late 60's early 70's made and would not know how many rounds have been shot but the grouping at the 100 meters is still under half inch. Due to the fact a .222 is not a big canon the barrels dont get a canning unlike larger cal rifles. The other good thing is it's not as loud as larger calibers even .223. I have on many occations sat in one spot spotlighting and called in 3 or 4 foxes in amatter of minets and the shots have not been a problem. Reloading make it cheeper and you can find that perfect load for your rifle. So you cant go wrong with a .222 for foxes I'm also a Sako shooter so check them out to.T3 or 85 Hunter or Vermint.
