Malc
I do not use one. They work, but, not wanting to seem arrogant or anything, I honestly don,t need one. Also, I carry enough kit with me already without anything else.
BigDave15
I dont Have One just because there a rip off And I am going to try to make my self. I repeat "TRY"
Cranfield
I don,t think they are "essential", but they are "effective". Anything that puts movement into a decoy layout is good. Floaters or shell decoys bobbing in a breeze do it, they don,t have to be electrically powered. However, I have heard that electric peckers are the next big step forward in decoying. highdowns hunter
When I was a lad (many moons ago,) we used to make decoys out of cardboard and we also made flappers out of dead birds, coat hanger wire and a bit of string. They worked then and cant see why they wouldnt now. Unless them there pigeons have gone all Hi- Tech on us. Those were the days
sutty
I have one but only use it now and again, I agree with malc somedays the can be a burden to cart accross a field especially with all the other gear we need. However if conditions are right they are worth owning. Sometimes they bring birds in sometimes they dont. I usually use mine in the autumn/winter, it may be me but it seems not to jink them as much as in spring/summer when there is more food around for them Your thoughts gentlemen please regards sutty
Malc
Highdowns, I had some cardboard decoys "many moons" ago. They worked well! I think they would work today too. Maybe...... we could have a little competition. See who can decoy a pigeon with the most unlikely "decoy".
Cranfield
The first pigeon decoys I used were glass milk bottles, painted grey, with two lines of white paint on each side of the bottle and round the neck. We then progressed to,homemade cut out tin, shell shaped decoys. The funny thing about these was that they were all different sizes, ranging from "blackbird" to "goose" size. Strangely the pigeons didn,t care. The recent hide question reminds me of another "old time" fact. Our hides were cut open potato sacks, nailed on to posts. We use to carry these everywhere and when set up, they were adorned with some nearby foliage and worked a treat. Nobody had invented Realtree or Advantage then. highdowns hunter
Im not quite as old as cranfield However when we used to decoy Teradactyls you had to be very carefull to keep the decoys well away from your cave hide and make sure that you hit them with your first rock Otherwise they would come and get ya
