motty
Always be polite. Don't turn up to speak to a farmer dressed like a tramp or a soldier. Make the farmer aware of your experience - it always helps if you are a decent shot. I've always found it is best to ask the farmer in winter, when pigeons are busy attacking his rape. Also, if you have insurance, let the farmer know. This will help in most cases. Edited October 7, 2012 by motty
ozzy518
Dont forget to clearly state how much you will be charging him to shoot his pigeons and what kind of cartidges you will want him to supply.
hawkeye
Why have BASC been useless wont they go and ask the farmers for you.. They aren't there to find you shooting im sorry mate but you have to get in the motor and find where there is trouble been caused and then go door knocking and ask. Just be polite they can only say YES or NO ans if they say NO then give them a contact number for you in case you can be of assistants in the future... You will get a lot more say No than Yes just don't let it get to you...
Amazed
I started with the smaller farm, then asked him when I knew him a bit better who's land was who's etc if he thinks your doing a good job he will pont you in the right direction for more land If you find your confidence talking to them wains a bit try the letter/ business card route. Good luck pal.
paddywack
i do a few favours to help out a local game shoot, and get the vermin shooting permission. also had some cards printed ,SEEKING SHOOTING PERMISSION, & contact details. gave out loads of these to farm workers/contractors and eventually got the rabbit control on a farm that had twice refused me permission. keep trying,i had no luck for acouple of years, but ended up with 100s of acres
tigger
As I said in another thread I still believe that the best way to get permissions is to go beating for a local shoot and when you show your a decent and reliable individual you can have all the pest control you want that's how I got mine put a bit of time and effort in to finding some gamekeepers who need beaters and you shall reap the rewards..... paddymax123
thanks for the help guys i should be putting it to the test next weekend, let u know how it goes, one last thing is it found irratating to the farmers if you knock on the door and ask them or is it better to just try and 'bump' into them
gibspoon
thanks for the help guys i should be putting it to the test next weekend, let u know how it goes, one last thing is it found irratating to the farmers if you knock on the door and ask them or is it better to just try and 'bump' into them I went round a few more farms over the weekend to try my luck. It's probably just an area thing, but even though they were all 'no thanks', they were all decent and asked for business cards. Most were happy to chat. I've only ever had one farmer who got the hump at me showing up un-announced, and got all 'deliverance' on me.
