TJ91
just come back from where that hapened, i saw a few seals coming up the estuary with the tide. a fellow fowler i got talking to told me of what had happened and told me to watch my dog and not let it in the water, 25minutes later i saw the same guy send his dog out into the water to pick a goose luckily i managed to drop all my birds on the mud, i would not send my dog into the deeper water having heard about it sako...it is a nice little flightline that was getting way over shot the last few days, just the other night a minibus full of guys pulled up and it was like a warzone, plenty of out of range shooting
wildfowler.250
I still think that the chances of this happening to your dog must be very slim?

Pole Star
Just heard today of a similar case that happend here in Orkney some years ago but it did not have a sorry ending↲ My brother in Ireland told me that the seals always come for look when his springer is swimming in the sea so told him best to keep it away if he see's any seals about . I wonder how often this happends ? .
geth25182889
I just wondered whether both seal species found in the uk tend to express aggressive behaviour towards other animals, eg; dogs or geese. Or is it just the grey seals? I was out wildfowling thismorning on my local patch and there was a common seal present in the water. I noticed it there when i was winding in my decoys and my dog was in the water swimming around. I called him out immediatly for his saftey and the seal didnt seem at all fussed by him or me at all. infact it was quite inqusitive and came really close to us. i must admit it did seem rather freindly in its nature. This is in total opposite to the aggressive/territorial behaviour expressed by the grey seals that are present on my other patch. has anyone else noticed this difference between the two species? also does anyone know if it was a grey or a common that attacked that poor lads labrador? drone
I was tucked up on a creek on the wash in the mid eighties about the same time that there was that seal flu about. My old lab was curled up when a seal surfaced about 5 foot from us. Seal eyed dog, dog eyed seal, dog and seal barked simultaneously and the seal slipped away. At that time rotting seal carcases were a common site on the fenland's shooting. Never suspected they were a danger for dogs, may be just in the mating season?
