new to the flock
Lancs Lad, There are very few ECS here in Canada, a few more in the USA. The ones that I have seen work work wonderful, as to my experiance with the breed .....none. Do I want a working Dog or Bitch.....OH YES. lurcherboy
Lancs Lad, Mad Springer will be your man on this one mate. I have a few dogs but the cocker has become my favourite. It may be a good pigeon dog in time but it wont be until he is older He is far too lively for a hide and his true worth is when walking with the gun. A small Lab bitch could be more up your street and definetly simpler to train. Either way good luck in your choice mate LB
sussex lad
Anyone shoot over cockers!! I know its great to enjoy your dogs, but isn't that taking things a little to far
henry d
They are little people and will try and get one over on you at every turn and are high maintainance If your Mrs has her eye on one then get one as a pet and buy a lab for sitting in a hide. If you do rough shooting/beating then get a springer. I have 2 ESS`s and it has taken ONLY 11 yrs to get my old one to lie down and stop shivering in anticipation the whole day. harryhawk
As the saying goes " Springers are spaniels but cockers are the little peaple" After 20 odd years of springers i've got a cocker now and can say, hand on heart that they have "character" and mine hates the wife as well

Lancs Lad
would you recomend one........ What are the "heart burns" about them..... Are they mental like springers.?
lurcherboy
would you recomend one........ What are the "heart burns" about them..... Are they mental like springers.? My one is definetly less manic than a springer LL but he is from very good stock (welsh) and was fully trained when bought by the owner. I ended up with him through some complicated circumstances which would be a whole thread on its own You cannot walk a cocker without out it doing a number of things. First, no water or mud will be allowed to pass by without being attacked. Second, they will find any and everything that sticks to them and become firmly attached at every opportunity. Third, every walk is a hunt wether you have a gun with you or not. LB
Piebob
Hehe - LB's post about sums it up. My cocker dog is almost 8 months so too young for me to have done any shooting with him. I'm in a couple of rough shooting syndicates and I'm hoping to get him trained enough be useful in those. Right now, I can't imgaine him EVER being able to sit still in a pigeon hide so if that's your main intention I would think you'd have your work cut out. He's my first dog though, so I'm only going on the very limited first hand experience I have. Piebob
MadSpringer
Lancs Lad. Will this be your first dog? If it's mainly a dog for sitting in the hide and fetching a few pigeons then why not consider a small lab bitch. If your set on a spaniel then I would suggest a ESS over a Cocker! Cockers are great little characters and full of life. As has been mentioned they're not too keen on sitting for long periods Will add more later! Off after a few geese now! Cheers

Cheers Oh ******...........here was me thinking springers were mental.................... missus wants a smallish dog...................thus the reason for me looking for a small spaniel.............such as the cocker......... all the e.s.s that I have come across have been mad as balloons................... springer or cocker............mainly for the hide......... MadSpringer
springer or cocker............mainly for the hide......... Springer!!!!!!! I do take my Cockers out in the hide and they are fine if I'm only out for a few hours! They like to be busy and not the best at sitting still for hours! They are very affectionate little ******* and demand plenty of attention and you just have to go with it or they sulk! If your heart is set on a Cocker and your better half wants one then go for it. But I warn you it will spend loads of time on her knee and you will wear a frown on your forehead and a big smile on your face If you want my honest opinion then I would suggest you get a springer and train it well! They're not mad, yes they love to hunt but you need to control their drive, folks go wrong by letting them range to far too young! If you want to chat give me a call. new to the flock
Why not look at getting a terrier Bedlington, jack russel, boarder....they are all small and love to retrieve. My Cody brings back everything he kills Seriously they are a viable option Cody brushes rabbits, retrieves birds, and hunts rats...also trees squirrels great little hunter and quiet in the house....biggest draw backs are he is so small when you are use to looking out for big dogs to trip over and he thinks that he should be allowed in your lap the whole time he wants to NTTF Mad Springer... if that lovely little Cocker Bitch is proving to be a bad idea I think I could still be persuaded to give her a home for you. Dead-Eyed Duck
I have a cocker, and didn't read the instruction when they said that all cockers are 'independent'. i.e. if they disagree with what you think and with what you ask, then they will do what they want to anyway. Very affectionate, grovelling abilities worth an Oscar, and absolutely, stupidly fearless. You know that you need a challenge in life - go on - get a cocker.
