I was out yesterday. Had a great couple of hours. Watched the sun come over the horizon whilst I sat in the car with the wind rocking it side to side. Nothing was moving so had another cup of coffee and thought about going home. Just as I reach over my shoulder to put my seatbelt on, I see a huge flock heading towards the farm, watch them pass over and land in the trees followed by another two flocks who land in the field. Watched them for 10 mins and they were loving the high winds. Darting around all over the place just for the fun - who wouldnt?.

Just took a flapper and 50 carts, no decoys, no hide, and a folding stool.

I had to lean into wind several times walking to my chosen spot - it was fearsome and made you feel quite humble.

I wouldnt have lasted half an hour in this weather so chose a set up where I was out of the wind using the woods as a wind break and facing some open ground oppositve another wood. A spot where I had watched them fly through this open valley between the two woods at 20-30 yards high. I sat down just behind some light cover and whilst I prepared the gun and sipped a coffee. They were zipping down this channel, wings back like fighter jets in twos and small groups. Mentally prepared my self for the taks then it took me two of three shots before I finnally got my eye in but then had two hours of the most exciting shooting and some of the most testing conditions I have had ever. I only managed 24 (but this trip was never going to be about numbers) and lost a couple in the woods, but yesterday was one of my most satisfying trips in quite a long time.

Sounds good, I didn't do so well. Most of the rabbits were sheltering in loads of cover to get away from the gale-force winds. Twice I sat and watched a black rabbit once at 20 yards and once at around 40 but as I have been asked by the farmer to leave them I couldn't take the shots. I managed one rabbit but I sent the dog out over a bridged stream to get it but instead of bringing it back across the bridge, she tried to swim the swolen stream with it, and lost it. I did shoot a squirrel though, and I saw plenty of pigeons on the rape so I'll come back mid-week for them.
