It never ceases to amaze me the kind of responses you get from 50% of people on this forum. I've NEVER known a forum to flame everyone as bad as this one.

You should refused entry to clay grounds for a "tactical" looking gun? Seriously?

The shooting world thinks it's one big boys club. No room for anything or anyone new. I really don't know why anyone bothers asking advice on this forum. I did once, I won't be making that mistake again.

And lets all get the word "Walt" in there somehow. How very grown up and clever I feel now! Most people who say it use it at least once a week on various threads in this forum.

Buy what you want/like, use it where you are allowed, screw everyone who frowns upon it. They have the same kinds of views as most of the antis they all seem to detest so much.

Pistol grips give far better control of guns and allow you to carry them for longer periods of time more comfortably. Hence why all non-sporting guns have them now, and why even sporting guns have a stock/palm swell leaning towards a pistol grip, rather than a traditional straight stock

Totally agree and if anyone watched the Olympics then they may have noticed the number of shotguns fitted with a pistol grip -

Including the Gold medal winners !

I am interested in the replies saying that they shoot clays with a FAC shotgun - I have a FAC semi-auto but it is clear on my licence that it is only for vermin control, so I have never taken it to a clay ground, which is a shame as I would like to get a better feel for it by breaking some clays.

Can I get 'clay tgt shooting' added to my FAC? it is up for renewal right now as it happens and if the clay grounds don't mind and the police will allow it then I'll definitely add it to the renewal forms. I am assuming if it isn't on your FAC and you shoot clays with it then you are breaking the law.

PS - it isn't about looking pretty - if it works for you go for it.

The clay pigeon condition is supposed to be added automatically for S1 shotguns but i'm yet to meet anyone who hasn't had to ask for it  Just ask for it and it will be added to your certificate.

Mine says, "The 12 bore shot gun may also be used for CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING

Really? What "club" am I excluding anyone from? Showing my support of a football team or displaying my nation's flag?

What a load off horse manure SNIPER with a username like that , work hard play hard that's my motto , most of us use the shotgun as a recreational based hobby or vermin control , so what difference does it make if I use a tactical looking shotgun to do the job? The police didn't give me my licence for no reason , they've done the job of issuing my licence and I buy what ever I want within my certificate says, and if the clubs I visit does not permit me to shoot my 12 gauge I will go else where . Regardless off looks to the shotgun it does its job by breaking clays or killing vermin.

Do you think browning, benelli or hatson to name a few manufacturers would produce carbon fibre, Matt black, chrome, looking shotguns for display purposes only, I don't think so .. Love shooting my English sxs and also love shooting my tactical pump action ,both does the job very very well .

I'm not sure that would stand up to legal scrutiny! I reckon you could argue it under 'zeroing' though, since the clay ground effectively gives permission for you to shoot on their land and you are using your firearm on clay tgts in order to check the aim..... sounds like 'zeroing weapon on land which you have permission to shoot'

Of cause I'll run it by my FLO first :)

I am trying (and failing!) to save up to buy my first shotgun. I am a very occasional shooter, and haven't been for a few years, but I have an air rifle which has seen a bit of action in the field.

I have my heart set on a camo semi auto 12g, with a view to doing some rough shooting, which I have some occasional permission for, and perhaps the odd daywildfowling in the future, once I find someone to go with. I am not interested in doing any driven shooting, or organised game days. Based on this I think a multi-tasking single gun is the way forward, and pref. 3.5" chamber multi choke so I can fire any load.

The problem is that probably half of my shooting will probably be on clays. What kind of reception would I get at the clay ground with a camo semi auto?

I am experienced with safe weapons handling, having done plenty of small bore and assault rifle range shooting.

ReportSO you say you want a camouflaged semi auto shotgun, what difference is it to a tactical looking one at least mine is black in colour and can be seen in club grounds and not camouflaged like the one you want. I'm sure we've all been taught of safe gun handling haven't we?? Hand guns or shotguns !

well guys I have one and I think they are a great piece of kit and it has never let me down :good:

The sights and the grip take some getting used to, but once you can get your head round that you wont look back, but saying that yes there is some stigma assosiated with this type of shotty, and yes I agree with both sides. If everyone had one I wouldn't have any stocks to work on . But there is room for both and they serve us well for the purpose they were intended for, mine is used for rough shooting and wild boar hunting abroad. I do agree they are not for a traditional shoot.

As for clay grounds I see no reason why they should not be allowed there, as I see shooting clays is a way of honing your skills and were better to practice than a clay ground to ensure that when hunting you can afford your quarry a humane death.

just my opinion :hmm:

Willpoon You have one of the niceset looking guns I've seen pictured on here. I don't understand why you've decided to quote me, and attack me? I AGREE with being allowed tactical looking guns, camo guns, semi autos, whatever. RE-READ.

Agreed. Whatever you own, you need somewhere to practise with it.

Jesus........ I AGREE with you. I have done all along, I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH ANY gun. They SHOULD all be allowed at clay grounds. So why the attack?

I personally like the 'Tackleberry' style of shotgun. I know it's a Marnite thing, but I prefer synthetic stocked weapons due to the sheer ruggedness and ease of cleaning. Plus if you bang it on the cabinet or a farm gate, it's no biggy!

The odd thing is, people who like the tactical/synthetic furnished guns don't seem to bitch and moan about the Grade 6 Perazzi brigade, yet they seem quick to bash anyone 'bucking the trend'.

It's one of the reasons I don't like clay grounds too much. A great activity ruined by the snobbery of some people.

If you pull anything other than a walnutty O/U out of your slip at most, the nosey tossers behind you will gawp at you like you've just pulled a sex toy out and started waving it around!

Why can't we just be a little more tolerant of difference in this country and stop being sheep who fall into line with out of date 'traditions' for the sake of not standing out,or having to justify one's decisions?

And while I'm at it, tweed, for clay shooting? Why??

I think as a protest I'm going to dress up in a shiny tracksuit, reversed baseball cap, some box fresh sneakers (innit!) and take a pump action which I've 'pimped' with a gold paint pen to a clay ground, and instead of using ear defenders I shall wear some enormous headphones, blaring some Ice-T.

On hitting each clay I shall punch the air and yell " ave it!! " , "get in my son!" or "who's the daddy!!".

On taking position at each stand and loading my gun I shall also call out "lock 'n' load!"

Then I'll count to ten and wait to be physically ejected by the port swilling tweed-gods. :)

I'll have some of that too. lumberjack shirt, Miller beer baseball cap, and pump action, which I'll pull from the rack in my Jeep in front of the range rover gentlemen!

Lol, redneck clay shooting! It'll be in the next Olympics if we can just get enough followers.

Recession proof too, as the costly clay trap can be replaced by Otis chucking an empty Miller Lite can while JimBob shoots it!

at least with rednecks you wouldnt get all the narrow minded tweed wearing yar yar snobs we seem to have here.... I'll take a redneck shoot anyday.

Now a request.... if you've got nothing decent or helpful to add and are just spouting tripe because something doesnt conform to your narrow minded small world do us all a favour and go polish your wood rather than waste our time on here.

Being a new member I was disappointed with the first two replies as I feared that kind of closed mind view would be reflected throughout the forum... luckily this wasnt the case... faith is restored.
