Alycidon
Well your guns and FAC ammo should always be under lock and key except when you have one out to use or clean so I cant see the problem. They wont do one unless they have good reason. A

bedwards1966
http://www.basc.org.uk/en/media/pressreleases.cfm/prid/7E4E7647-F411-4314-B284D5FBB1AEE740 This is far from random. It's a very bad idea to do this - having uniformed police turning up is a bit of a giveaway, it's best to be careful when shouting that firearms are in a property. They should arrange a mutually convenient time to visit. Police officers know nothing about firearms (that's why they train certain people for firearms work) so they aren't able to achieve anything by doing this as they don't know what they're dealing with. It will serve no purpose - what are they hoping to achieve? Are they hoping that they will find someone over their bullet allowance? It stinks of doing everything they can to target and inconvenience law abiding shooters. For anyone who gets the police knock on the door for these checks, you can tell them to go away and make an appointment for a trained person to come at a convenient time. If you feel you'd be better off letting them throw their weight around and come in without any legal power to do so, phone the 101 number and check who they are. This is an easy way a criminal could get themselves in your gun cabinet, by getting hold of a police uniform and flashing a badge at you. If they are genuine police, they won't mind you checking. al4x
What they are hoping to achieve is to catch people who have left guns out. Rumour on another site has it that it's due to burglars finding guns out when entering two properties. Now that's not in anyone's best interest. With luck the threat of a visit gets about and people start behaving themselves

Of all the renewal visits I have had not one has been by a uniformed officer, for interest its the Lothian and Borders. Blackpowder
HDAV
Yep print out the BASC guidance and send them away, if you are not at home but family are tell them to follow the guidance ring 101 for confirmation before sending them away
bedwards1966
Laugh all you want. I fully agree with anyone who says that guns should be kept secure, but to have police with no knowledge of firearms come for a random inspection because you hold a SGC/FAC is not acceptable. Why not come and check on everybody who holds a driving licence as well? If someone does have a gun out of the cabinet when it should be locked away and the police come knocking it'd do no good as that person could tell just them to go away - who'd be daft enough to let them in to show them they'd not bothered to lock something away? It looks like they're hoping to get people for silly minor things and to be a nuisance. There is no clear reason to do these checks.
GingerCat
Sounds like a stupid idea to me, everyone knows there are very few reasons for police to be able to legally enter your property without invitation or a search warrant and to be fair we have lots if other things keeping us busy that diesnt involve checking up on law abiding citizens Personally I wouldn't be very happy with it and would raise it with the inspector when I saw him next. Which, would be very soon indeed. Take basc's advice on this one but id imagine its a load of bs.
