danspence2012
hi all. have been working my latest cocker on my very rough shoot. he is for ever getting cuts and scrapes on his chest while hunting.. seen these for sale http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/110957546732?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&adtype=pla&crdt=0 i do like the idea and pluss for smaller dog such as mine they would be a bit warmer. I JUST CANT BRING MYSELF TO BY ONE, DUE TO embarasment, i mean, the guys i shoot with would take the mikky and so would i to be honest. but if i seen some one else with one i would get one..lol. whats your veiws of these vests?? waist of time or? contrysports
just got my lab one but thats for wildfowling, i'm not really sure about rough shooting as it could get ripped or the dog could get caught up in it. but overall a good product. steve0146
I have one for mine but its a wildfowling dog and only wears it on the coldest mornings. She spends her time sitting still and (very) occasionally swimming for a retrieve. I really wouldn't bother on a cocker on a rough shoot. He would be prone to over heating as he is constantly moving about. Plus there is the added risk of getting tangled.
huntsman
I personally would put a dog jacket on my dog on a shoot ,there will be many inexperienced guns who would shoot on movement Out in the US they place orange jackets on their dogs for the same reason. But to stop the dog getting scratched ........... is a BIG no no
sky gipsy
Not a good idea in my opinion. If it is so rough, how do you know he will not get caught up whilst wearing one? Mine works hard, gets cuts etc, but that goes with the job & he always gets them seen to ASAP. Plus it will keep him warm....but too warm. al4x
Yup no one works a dog in a vest they would overheat or get tangled. Cuts and scratches are part and parcel of working, mine gets a fair few despite being a pointer but generally superficial.
danspence2012
hi all, lol, agree with your points, this was a discushion i was having with some one and i was concerned about overheating and getting hug up too. was just making sure i had my facts right.. thanks for the replys i will continue as i am.. thanks all
lee-kinsman
No from me lab or spaniel. They overheat and are very likely to get hung up in water or in brush. Not a good idea IMO. ATB, Lee
rtb
I have a cocker and we normally beat 2-3 times a week. Cuts and grazes come with the job that she does, but she has a very thin coat and when she gets wet it's to the skin and she can get cold quickly. This is not a problem when she is active but sometime after working very toppy and wet beet or after she has retrieved a bird from water at the end of a drive rather than have her shiver with cold between drives I have a neoprene vest for her, put it on while we move between drives take it off before we start the next one. Only done this 2-3 times this season, am I being soft- maybe, but she does everything I ask of her and works hard. Would I work her with the vest on, no but it has had it's uses. rimfire4969
I would not work mine in a vest, for all the same reasons, getting too hot and getting caught up. I do have vest for her that she has at lunch and the end of the day.
unclestuffy
I think it is fair to say that you should not be too soft on your dog, scratches, bumps, cuts and collisions are all part of the working dogs life. I always check the dog after a days working but as already stated it is only minor injuries and the dog has the loved the whole day
kent
its no bad thing to dry and cover such a dog at breaks but bad idea while working IMO, too hot and risk of getting caught up
