SGs (buckshot)

Any of you guys use SGs for foxes ? if so how do you get on with them. They dont pattern well in my Beretta

but the yanks swear by them out to 50/60yards for foxes and coyotes.

What choke works for you and what is the tightest pattern that can be expected at say 30 yards ?

I like to keep a box in case have to destroy a cow. I also have some problem deer that cant be shot with a rifle

but I can often get within 15/20 yards and so I have to sort them with the 12 bore but as of yet I have not tried them as cant seem to get a safe shot and wont shoot until I can.

I would be interested to know what they are like on fox. I usually use BBs.

I haven't tried them in my Benelli yet but I dont suppose they will perform much better. One bloke on an american forum claims he shoots foxes to 50/60 yards routinely. I cant see how.

SG and CHOKES

Don't do it.

For SG i would SERIOUSLY be looking at cylinder only if you start choking the barrel it could be a tad messy

BBs i would use a 1/2 choke MAX

You MAY get away with another but my personal beleif is IF you over choke on LARGE shot like BB AAA SG it can damage your barrels

Mate of mine was using size 2s and 0s to bowl over rabbits at 50-55 yards no problem (stone dead)

The Guy at Bywell was telling us he has seen a fox dropped at 30 yards or so with a thump to the head with 6s??

Personally i think the smallest for fox Should be BBs to ensure a clean kill

I think SG for fox is overkill.

I've never shot basil with SG's but I got a box ages ago and had some fun shooting at a thick wooden headboard on a old trailer and a couple of squirrel dreys. I use Alphamax 3's for sheep or a Frost's clipper knife.

SG's are supposed to be good for Wild Boar or other large stuff out to 35 yards.

slugs out to 100m, but section 1 here

Quite right too, look at this

IMHO bb's are top dollar for fox, sg would be OK at a shorter range but be very aware of your back stop :) , look at it like this, SG 32 grams, 9shot in the case that's 3.555 grams a piece, doing around 1400fps, a .22 RF is 2.6 grams doing 1050fps and you would watch where you point that :)

If it is lead you can use any of the large size shots through full choke without any problems at all. :)

I've fired many sg's through my fixed full choked 303 without any problems at all. It's had several hundred BB loads through it too!

I now use my 0.655" (Xtra full) Terror choke for any of my SG or HeviShot fox loads.

I hear Buck shot groups better if using IC chokes??

How true this is i am not sure but there is a lot of debate about it on the yank forums :)

After seeing first hand what happened to the Escorts Chokes i installed Beretta ones instead

I have used BB through a 1/2 at around 40 yards and it seemed to pattern ok :)

Thanks for the response fellas. I think the best thing to do is get off my **** and actually pattern them through both of my guns and both sets of chokes. Probably should of done before I posted but I was hoping that the replies would all lean one way and save me the bother.

Guess thats shooting !

paul223, great link mate very interesting.
