Little_Dom
Im considering getting a new gun and am tempted to get either a .410 or a 20 bore, what's everyones opinion on them and which would i be better going for?
kent
Both different animals. The 20 is more a lighter to carry / faster to swing gun to replace a 12 bore, the .410 a true small bore shotgun for vermin etc.
hawkfanz
agree with kent i use a 20 alot but traded in my sbs 410 for a 28g,410 are very limited as to their use
robbiep
I use a .410 for a few differing things. 1. dispatching foxes that I've caught in cage traps. Its only a cheap (£70) little single barrel Webley/Scott bolt action gun, so I don't mind it bashing on the cage bars, etc. 2. It's light. I go rabbiting and ratting, and it's nice to carry around for hours on end. 3. The cartridges are also light. Yes, there is a lot less shot (I usually use 14g of No. 6), but that just means I pick my shots a lot more carefully. I actually account for a better kill:shot ratio with the .410 than I do with a 12 bore. Carrying 50 .410 cartridges in pockets is so much more comfortable than 20 bore or 12 bore shells. Don't get me wrong, a .410 is limited compared to a 20 bore, but it's not as useless as some would have you think. So far this year, my .410 has had : 4 rabbits, 2 magpies and 2 foxes. For a total of 8 shots. Discount the foxes (in traps) and that's still 6 for
Alycidon
Why are you thinking of doing this?. ,410 is ok for indoor rats but not a lot of good outside at much over 20 yards. 20 bore is a far better bet. I shot today beside a guy using a 20, he reached as far and killed as dead as I did with a 12. A Edited January 16, 2013 by Alycidon

Little_Dom
What will it be used for? clays and pigeon shooting, if anything im leaning towards a 20 bore
Northamptonclay
28 bore is the way to go
ChAoS
If you want *different*, get a lever-action. For example, something like a Winchester 9410 (.410) or Winchester 1887 (12 guage) clone. *Great* fun... Regards, Mark.
RAMMER BURT
28 bore is the way to go +
al4x
clays and pigeon shooting, if anything im leaning towards a 20 bore your main consideration then is cartridge cost, a 20 is definitely better than a .410 but for both of those requirements a 12b is better still. Were you after a light game gun then a 20 does come into consideration but not for clays and pigeons.
Fuji Shooter
A .410 on any other clays but skeet is a truly humbling experience but still great fun. It will make you a better shot in the long run but the peddling costs are high especially on 3" loads.
hawkfanz
i think al4x is wrong my 20g is just as good in the pigeon hide as my a300 auto, its just ammo is more expensive,i can get a better deal on 12g ammo.
