home built rotary magnet, short battery life

just built a magnet using a ford escort wiper motor, it will spin two dead pigeons at good speed but with a brand new fully charged 12v 5ah battery it will only run for about an hour before the battery is flat, no idea what size the motor is but it seems to be a bit heavy on amps, also running the power through a 20 meter cable so I can have the battery in the hide, does this affect the power drain, ideas or suggestions please. nothing rude

Yes and yes to both questions, take as an average amperage use for a wiper motor with dead birds mounted 2 amp per hour ( amperage usage can vary a little from motor to motor)

a 5 amp hour battery will last approximately two and a half hours .

Using a long lead from the hide will burn up a little power as well especially if too thin .

As above most use around a 17 amp hour battery for a good days shooting .

  • 2 weeks later...

forget a trolly just drive to the place were you want to build your hide

weve messed about with motors for years and found the best ones are from the old mini metro

ive made a couple of lightwieght ones as well from motors from ebay but get a motor with a 6mm output shaft

7amph batteries are ok for hypperflappers but you need 12-17amph ones for dead birds
