cats and dogs get along just fine, the cat normally ends up boss though coz it has more and less lethal weapons at its disposal- the dog knows it can pop its ribs or crush its head but doesn't as it isn't hard wired to kill family members (well most are not ) and the cat takes advantage with an odd swat to the nose of the dog with its pins! WDG has a point rifle or shottie? as shooting rabbits with a .22 means a retriever and out of cover with a shotgun means spaniel. Don't inhibit the breeding of a dog by asking it to do that which it was not intended to do HPRs don't take well to sitting for long periods in hides, spaniels are not meant to walk tirelessly to heel and Retrievers don't go into cover unless they think theres something there- Generalisations I know but more often than not true

I would take a good look at the shooting you do now and may do in the future. If you are thinking about rough shooting one day maybe a springer or cocker, if you are planning on decoying pigeon a retriever might be a better choice. As long as you get a dog with good working pedigree it should cross over many bounderys and do what you want from it.
