Hi all,

I have trouble with some rats around some outbuildings at home.

I have never used spring traps before, does anyone have a picture guide or guide on how to use and set these traps up, they look nasty and i dont want to loose any fingers.

Hope somone out there can help.

Many Thanks

All ive done for my shoot, is to weather the traps in by burying them in light soil for a while, then set the traps and cover them with a rectangular wooden box structure which slides over the trap. I then put 2 sticks either end to smallen the gap so only rats and squirrels go in,

Bobs your uncle/

P.s try just leaving the wooden cover first on the run without the trap in then place it in after its being used.

I dare say someone has a picture of it so you can get the idea.

scrap out your trap bed

anchor your trap

traping005Small.jpg

put your trap on top of the anchor

blend in the soil on top of it

remember to remove the safety catch

then I use a marker to show what burrows have got a trap in them

Mk.6 for rabbits and I believe they should be set on the hole so no need for bait.

Bait for rats.......you`ll get a million answers here,I like to tidy up any loose feed and use cereal.

when setting fen traps set the brass plate and catch as fine as you can with the saftey catch on of course and lastly take it off. the finer you set it the easyer it will go off and will splat the rat

deffently not for rabbits a big no no!!

bait with wheat or chocolate biscuit anything yummy

cheers kirky

Quite right but if you buy your traps brand new set them with the safety catch on then check the plate sits level you might need to lift it by putting a screwdriver under neath it and aplying some pressure then set it as fine as you can it all helps

The pictures were of great quality but could be slightly misleading, in so much as it illegal to set these traps in the open.

All Fenn/ springer traps need to be set in some form of tunnel, either man made or natural (rabbit burrow), to prevent catching non target species. If you set in rabbit holes make sure it is the large size 6 trap and that it is set well down the burrow.

Well folks thaks for all ur advice,

I set the fenn trap last night, safety went off and caught my thump, it hurt like hell , but a valuable lesson, use a stick to take it off ! Anyway i build a narrow cover by the shed wall place to large stone by the entrances on both sides only to allow rats to go through, nno danger to other wildlife or birds, and i baited it with an egg. I cracked it open , and drizzled some yolk and left the shell i place.

to my shock a dirty large rat,... will post this pic off mobile phone later.

Will try peanut butter tonight insted.

Just to let the other people know i shall not be using these for rabbits, i to belive in sensible hunting and i would not want any animal to suffer or die a slow death.

Thanks All

Scolopax .my first line i like these set in a burrow , the photo's where taking in my garden in the summer to show somebody off another site .

Welshdragron 77 When your taking the safety catch off a fenn keep your hands to the side as fenn only spring up wards and they wont catch you but youv'e found out the hard way ,and it dont half bloody hurt .Watch the height of the tunnel you put it in as it springs upward it will scrap the prey into the jaws off the roof of the tunnel for a kill but if the tunnels too high it cant do this .

Ive got 50 fenn mk 6s and ive still to take anything live out of one of them the only thing thats stronger are the bodygrippers
