tiercel
At first when I took the photo this morning I thought it was a female Goldeneye because of the white bars on the wings. However, I have now seen a closeup pictue of a female Goldeneye and the head colour is different. So it seems as if Paul & Kenzie were right. Kenzie on his first go . Paul in North Lincs.
so are we to concede that it is a hybird or sorts then?.........or hen wigeon?:yp: oops now I'm confused

pavman
Its a female Tufted. I dont think so gents, a hen tufted has no white primary feathers (as far as I know) HOWEVER There are many hybrids and i suspect this may be a Scaup/Tufted hybrid or a other such as Scoter/Tufted I will mail the link to mum p who is a bit of a twitcher and may help
Highlander
No doubt that's a ruddy duck and pavmans gonna ask his mum
Paul in North Lincs.
No way........its not red enough for a ruddy!! or is it a ruddy with a brown rinse....
Highlander
I see my little quip fell on deaf ears Unfortunately much as I hate the idea I'd have to agree with pavman. It's a shame you didn't get a better side view of the head that would have been the clincher for tufted but these and many others of the diving ducks readily interbreed and hybrids are quite common. Where was it filmed? There are so many escapees from collections living wild now that it's getting ever harder to pick true breeds. See my post earlier this year about the bar headed goose nesting near us. The colouring of this one (the pic) is too multitoned to be a pure bred tufted female and I don't like the look of that whitish side and wing band looks too much like a female wigeon. On balance I'd say tufted/pochard/scaup hybrid or possibly wigeon...and that's my final answer!
tiercel
This bird was considerably smaller than the rest of the Tufted Male and female that were on the pond. That and the white wing band was what led me to believe that it was a Goldeneye. The photo was take on the Burry inlet / Lougher estuary in West Wales. Not more than a mile from here. As a coincidence it was the same pond that I shot my only Goldeneye on about 10 years ago. Before they developed the surrounding area in to a golf course. Side view of the same ducks head. pavman
The final answer is it is a young female tufted, as confirmed by my mum who is quite clever on these things so there no really its been looked at by some friends who are keen twitchers, who claim that if it had just landed the white off the wing bar would show prior to being tucked up, or something like that hope this helps
Stumpy1
See the egrets regularly on the other side of the estuary, usually when walking out to settle down for the evening flight. Beautiful spot

Stumpy1
Penclawdd mate. Not been down for a few weeks, but will be hitting it hard over Christmas. Hopefully some widgeon in the bag, as plenty showing.
