Performance motor insurance

Recommended Posts

Hi all, after a recent promotion at work (and pay rise) I've decided to get a new motor. I have a few mates who have started going to 'the ring' recently and would like to join them on their trips. I was thinking of getting a Subaru impreza, I know not most people's cup of tea but something I've fancied for a while now.

I started to look at insurance knowing it would not be cheap but after using the main comparison sites and a few specialist they all seem to be around the £4500 mark. Now as im 29 with 5 years NCD i feel it is very high. Then a mate tells me he's got a traders policy for mobile mechanics he does outside of his main job.

So do any PW'ers have any similar experience or advice regarding performance insurance or traders policy's.

Many thanks in advance for any advice given.

Are you a trader?

Accounts,liability insurance ete?

I dont think the premium relative to age is out really,im 44 full ncb,1 sp50 and pay £2200 on my 997.

I'm no trader. I used to be a mechanic so would probably use that and the odd service and repairs on mates cars i do put through the books.

Son has had 3 impreza's since he was 23 ( now 32 ) , he uses a firm called http://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/contact-us/ , all depends on your post code with these motors , he is SK paying under a grand .

Thanks for that Zulu. I will look into it. Unfortunately my postcode is OL which certainly doesn't help

Thanks for the quick replies.

Are you only considering an Impreza? By reputation, insuring them is disproportionately high compared to most other performance cars. Suffering from the XR3i syndrome, everyone stole or crashed one. Most people find it cheaper to insure an M3 now.

My BMW has almost identical performance stats to the WRX, but only costs me £460 per year to insure - and I'm only 1 year older than you (OP) and have 6 years NCB.

Hi Mikaveli, I have considered other options but due to my budget of about 3k (in the process of saving up) M3's seem a bit out of my price range. Even E36's start about 3.5/4k. Impreza's seem to be the best performance for value I can find. Maybe I'm best waiting and saving up a bit more.

Jonesbach not sure what kit car that is, do you have any pictures out of interest.

Also cheers Alex I will try them, the free track days insurance sounds great. Once again thanks for the replies. ATB 425

If you get a traders they will not want to see any receipts or books unless u have a claim , I've just finished with my traders and gone to a multicar policy as you don't get charged to change vehicles and is reasonable unless you want more than 3+ cars on if you get a traders remember if anything happens claim etc, you have to have trading proof ie auction invoices seller and buyer invoices trade wise wanted you to trade at least 6 cars a year minimum I am doing that now but I put them on my insurance when I trade it's a bit of a pain but you can do it all on Internet and dont get charged but obviously they have got wise to younger drivers putting supercars on hence them putting my traders up 400 last yr and I have never claimed,,, REMEMBER a traders will only pay a bottom trade value , so if you claim your 5k car has turned into a 2k car.... :)

Hi willpoon. After continually searching I've got it down to £3600 now which is still a joke, I currently cycle to work in bid to help saving up but my last car was a BMW 320 and my insurance was about £700 and that was only last year. I know it's a different group for insurance but really didn't think it would be that much more. Also the scooby I've been quoted for is standard, non import and not modified.

My mate has an evo 6, 5 mins from me and with a tracker and discount through the evo owners club his is still £2100. Which is around the mark I was expecting.

Delburto thanks for the info, a traders might be a cheaper option especially if I get my mate on it with me but in all honesty I'm no trader and it would be fudging the truth to get a policy going and knowing my look I will get done for fraud.

If only oldham wasn't full of thieving car scroats and cash for crash gangs I probably would be able to afford it.

Once again thanks for the replies, ATB 425

iv had a impreza and loved it. i know this is off topic but thought id tell you that they are horrific on fuel even driven slowly. i understand if its just a weekend car but still you will be lucky to get 25 mpg. i now have a bmw 330d which i can honestly say is the best car ever. i do track days at oulton park and angle sea circuits in it and its great fun. its got nearly 500nm of torque and will drift all day. but if driven normally you will get at least 40mpg. insurance is much much cheaper. and the rwd chassis is so much fun! as much as i love the impreza they can suffer from under steer but i will probably have another in my life one day.

hi bud ive got my mk2 escort insured with sureterm direct they were the cheapest buy far and its got a shed lod of mods big engine the lot and there all declared might be worth a ring , as for scoobys there loads of fun but just a bit common for me and really thursty and so ive been told the imports are cheaper to insure than uk cars for some reason and most imports are better made anyway with stronger engines steel cranks and forged pistons etc as standard and more bhp so worth looking into , but haveing said that the fastest impreza ive driven was a old rb5 with the prodrive factory upgrade went like hell and a mint one should be about 4-5 worth a look , alsoworth looking at is evo 4s there the same money
