I'm a bit of a newbie to the world of shotguns but I've been bunny bashing with air rifles for a few years now, anyway I have decided to get rid of my two PCP's and invest in a shottie for the bunnys . I have a new 12g Silver pigeon which I use for clays but want something quieter for Bugs and company so as not to disrupt and scare to bits the stable girls on the farm I shoot at .

I have heard 410's described as kiddies guns and been told by my RFD that the 12g mossberg hushpower pumps aren't very quiet so what's the payoff with a 20 or a 410 ? I guess I will be down on power and pattern spread from the 12g but can a 410 still bash bunnies well at 40yrds? Would a 20g give me more range or just a bigger pattern? What about cartrige prices as well, is a 410 cheaper than a 20g ?

The .410 can prove very deadly and a lot lighter / faster. I lamp with an un-moderated .410, shooting it one handed quite often, the shells are dearer to buy but a lot cheaper to roll your own due to lesser amounts of consumables. Play off is range 25 yrds max, better 15-20 IMO but anything reasonable size is very dead, after that the pattern lacks density from mine. As a pest gun they are quite dandy but either I can shoot better or respect my ranges more? perhaps the ammo has improved? but I had them into my late teens and found them very poor killers- amazed at the results I get now mind you. Seriously thinking of a nice 28 bore double one day for a walking- out gun on rabbits as a result

All the guages have the same basic velocity so using the same size shot they go the same range, the difference is the pattern which will be quite nearly the same in diameter for a given choke but far less dense due to the different weights of ammo used, so whilst a 12g and 410 using the same weight ammo say 14 gram will be very close to the same it's more normal to have the 12g using 28-32gram ammo so a much larger amount of shot in the pattern

If you see someone shooting at sporting clays you will probably be suprised at the range they kill a clay at, but may only hit with one shot where as the 12g may have 3 or 4

Personally I would stick with the rifles. Maybe think about the rimfire option but you will find any moderated shotgun very different to shoot. I had a 20g Investarm which was like shooting with a drainpipe and it also shot low. I got used to it but its not easy to be consistent with them.

I would steer clear of the mossberg 20g hushpower to heavy and clumbersome to be walking around with and sitting in a hide I have Owned one not for me I.ve got the 410. Hushpower pedretti 28" barrels not that impressed yes it quiet with 2 1/2 " cart but range 20 yards . P c p. better more range alot quieter more pigeons for the freezer with the s410

I sold my aa s410 a got a weirauch 97 and had it tuned,it is good for sitting pigeons etc to 40 yards but when in flight it became frustrating as you cant shoot them.

I got a pedretti 410 which is quiet but range not so good..so i then got myself a 20g o/u hushpower which although a bit cumbersome its more effective especially with the extra shot.

But as one of the other guys said a rimfire is best for rabbits but if your like me i cant get anyone to grant me permission for one..if i were you keep an air rifle and get a 410 pedretti

which can be had for £200-250 and keep a sensible distance and ambush them..
