Grazy
I'm thinking of stripping and oiling my stock myself. If it doesn't work out then i'll get one of the pros on here to do it. However I have purchase the scotchbrite pads and nitromors but wanted opinons on the oil. I am looking for a very light matt finish and not the shiny look. Any ideas what oil will give my this light matt finish?

Andy135
Usually you oil a stock to a shiny finish then cut it back with some form of fine abrasive to get the matte effect. Birchwood Casey do a cutting compound you apply to a Tru Oiled stock to take the shine off but very fine wire wool would also work, rubbed very gently over the stock to remove the shine. welshwarrior
Napier London Stock oil is very good or the CCI or Philips if you can't find it. Truoil is not good in my opion
johnbaz
Hi Welsh willies kit is Tung oil based and gives a satin finish, Tru oil gives a very high gloss finish.. Here are a couple of stocks that i've redone using willies kit.. This is welsh willies kit, it has everything you'll need to do your stock including Alkanet root oil, grain filler, wire wool and loads of other stuff! I bought the kit originally, did several stocks and ran out of oil so I got in touch and he was happy just to supply me with a couple of bottles of oil!! BTW, For the first three or so coats of oil, there isn't really any shine as such, it seems to come with more coats and a good build up of thickness so maybe just keeping the amount of coats down will keep it matte.. Good luck with your refurb Cheers, John
Grazy
Thanks John, that's exactly the finish I am looking for. I'll keep it to just a few coats.
welshwarrior
Sealing the grain properly will help with only applying a few coats. Cutting it back between coats well will help keep the Matt finish
