contrysports
get your umbrella you will most likely be getting wet try to watch the field to determine the flightlines and the best place to set up. Also if you set up later in the afternoon it will give the birds confidence in the field and should decoy more frequently. good luck
fenboy
I find they are not the best of drillings to shoot to be honest , the machinery nowdays leaves very few on top if any and as such the pigeon have very soon been and gone. contrysports
Why will the birds have more confidence if you set up in the afternoon? I find they do as they have been feeding all day on the field with no disturbance. It might just be a thing round my way but I would rather have 3 or 4 hours rapid shooting than sitting in a hide all day for maybe the birds to go find another field to feed on.also as it is last feed they have less time to go find another field and will be confident on the field as they have been on it all day and they will be hungry they should decoy better
fenboy
Personally I would always rather turn up to a field early and have a few birds on it and lots still to join them than turn up later and have to walk a large flock of pigeon off . If there are 500 birds already there then I see it as 500 missed opportunities to decoy them.

I was going to say,I disagree with this post, because I've had a couple of great days on pea drillings. BUT, thinking about it , it has only been good for a few days, then it's useless. So ,I have to say, I agree with it whole heartedly.

I have shot some very good bags on it , but it all depends how much is left on top and if its drilled in good conditions with modern drills chances are it will be very little. I have had 5 fields drilled in the last few days and there is not a pea to be seen on top and because of that no pigeons . Another two fields to be drilled this week.. That is a blow fenboy as you have been depending on the pea drillings to get you started. Lets hope that the drilling conditions for the other fields are not as good! There was already over 500 birds scattered across the field when i arrived. I knew they would be back for more later. I don't doubt i could have had a reasonable shoot had i turned up after 1pm, but i doubt i would have got near the 163 i ended with. I would always try to get to a field to shoot before noon unless i had time constraints or it's a last minute decision to go out.
Dannyboy220
I'm an early starter but do find a very quiet lull between 12-2pm every time.

I am just happy to have them in at last , I was not expecting great shooting till they get through and then it could be hit and miss , my favorite time on them is when they are well up and in flower though a good dog is handy then as they can take some finding without trampling the crop down.
