MG6065
Hi all? How often should I be cleaning the barrel of my 222? After every outing or not? Also will I have to re zero after every clean? I'm thinking of getting a bore snake? Cheers all
Bewsher500
depends how much you shoot! I have put 50 or so rounds through mine without so much as a bore snake its probably due soon, yours may need a recheck of zero, always worth it mine doesnt seem to
Tis1979
Not sure of the rifle but I would clean after every outing with a bore guide, rod, nylon brush then patches till they are clean I use riflecraft bore cleaner. the spike I use is also by riflecraft it has no false positive coating. Hope this helps mine Is a .223 but is much the same. If your not using the rifle weekly or for while run an oil patch through it before storage but remember to run a cloth through it before next use, you should not have to re-zero. Underdog
If your gun is cold when you come in condensation will want to form on it. Some may even enter the bore! A dry patch will remove it. Don't leave it ina bag! Getting a balanced approach is all that is needed and being anal is not much better than total neglect! U.
simon6ppc
i clean mine every time i fire a shot pal even if its just one, unless ive just checked the zero and ime going out that night with it and then will clean it the next day, i know folk who never clean there barrels and seem to get on ok, but i want more than minute of a deer accuracy...i think zero wise your scope could be faulty or your mounts etc unless your leaving oil or some thing in your barrel as cleaning it should not affect your zero, cheers simon... al4x
Get a bore snake use it each time you come back having fired a shot then do a proper clean occasionally, you get the moisture and residue out. Personally mine shoots spot on afterwards but its worth checking yours just to check
MG6065
Alright thanks for the replies fellas, I've ordered a boresnake off the bay, cheers all
Dekers
Centrefires need cleaning! Everyone has their own regime, personally I wouldn't put a bore snake anywhere near any of my rifles! And with modern powders they probably have little real use on shotguns anymore, which they were designed for! You can't clean a bore with a Bore snake, you still need solvents and patches as well, they don't clean the breech or the crown, and then the cleaning job, of the Bore Snake itself. If you like them then fine, not for me!
al4x
what they do is get rid of powder residue and moisture, I squirt some vp90 cleaner in first run it through and store. Then clean properly every 50 or so shots. When you get in late after foxing its that or put it away with a moist bore and that isn't perfect crown gets a wipe over as I do the rest of the gun. They aren't for cleaning but they sure beat the clean every 100 rounds approach. Shotguns I wouldn't use anything else these days

You can do that with a patch, and then throw it away, you don't need a Bore Snake which is then left covered in muck!

al4x
exactly most who don't like the idea never get them and don't realise how easy it is, personally I think you will cause more wear with a rod and a patch using it every time you go out but its all personal and depends how often you are out. I do 2-3 nights a week and when I get home with a wet rifle the last thing I want to do is get the rods out, 20 seconds later its had a run through with some moisture inhibitor and job done.
