Internal batteries in or out? Try with them out if not already done. I'd be inclined to go with a defective cable. They're easy enough to knock up, compliments of Maplins if necessary. Try an AVO on the one you have, giving it a bit of a flex to see if you can break the continuity.

I have the same problem with mine, only seems to do it when batteries are low or just changed to a fresh set, will switch it on and sometimes get nothing, sometimes comes on but no reticle or other on screen info usually there. However, when it does eventually work ok it seems fine till next battery change. leaving it off for 5 min before switching on after change of power source seems to work, not sure but think it may have something to do with interupted power supply then takes a while to recharge/reset itself. Going to try a new set of better quality batteries soon, mine are pretty old now and dont last long which cant be good for the unit.

Damn me, used mine with the remote for the first time last night - expected to be out for a good while - and got the same - no internal batteries fitted and none with me. Once it came on, I left it on and only started to fiddle once it was obvious that what I was after had gone to a different restaurant. Still not certain, but thought moving the plug about in the unit's socket did have an effect.

Have had a bit more of a fiddle this morning. If you have the problem, please don't take the following for gospel as I'm still not 100% certain, but for me, it's good enough.

Moving the power lead plug about at the unit's socket does cause power loss. To regain it, it is necessary to switch off, unplug and start again. I then noticed that the central (+) socket pin is split. With a thin craft knife/scalpel, I sprung this open a tad which prevented complete power loss but caused some 'interference' when the plug was 'manipulated'. I have 2 lithium batteries which both came with mains and car (cigar lighter) chargers. Quickly trying one of these, problem appeared to disappear - or when trying to avoid comeback when signing the F700, there was, 'no fault apparent'. I then noticed that the central positive socket on the plug on these is what I can only describe as a 'spring loaded'. A quality bit of kit ensuring a good contact. Having two, and don't really need them anyway, I'm going to cut the cable at the cigar plug end and attach this to the cigar lighter plug from the existing cable. Sorted.

Perhaps some electronics whizz member will recognise the description and know from where these type of plug can be obtained.
