I am stumped !..i can usually sort out all the "funnies" on the 1988 turbo desiel...but i am stumped this time

When i am driving , it goes a smooth as silk, but when i am coming to a corner and slow down or any time i slow down i hear an distinct "tick" it sounds like a loose tappit/ rocker...all those have been checked and are at 10thou/.25mm

when the enjine is under load its fine......weird..cant figure it out imsure all the shells are fine and gudgeon pins ok as they were done at 78000 with the timing belt but its not a knock or a tap but a "tick" that slows down as the motor slows down .

similar noise to a stone in a tyre !

any ideas ?

checked propshafts all fine ......made a listening rod and stuck it on the fuel lift pump.....it might be the lift arm tapping against the cam what do you rekon

quite possible mate. a dodgy lift pump will generally affect the power eventually. as said the vaccum pump {wabco} can make a ticking/tapping noise when they are on the way out.

i fitted a cheap allparts pump 18mths ago... i think the return spring is not strong enuff to keep it against the cam. the tick is at the same frequency as a valve tappit..and coupled with the fact it has got worse since i fitted 2 new / recon' cav injectors..will prberly mean that there is more or less ? fuel going back thro the bleed off line which might alter slightly the pressure in the pump side of the fuel system...i will fit 2 more recn injectors next week when i can afford it then if it makes a difference.....new decent lift pump....tomorrow i will check the wear on the arm on the pump

cheers for bouncing this prob about

ditch

ps made a listening rod and the vacuum pump sounds ok........a rebuild kit is only £16.50 so might do it anyway as its done 100000miles now !

has it got a viscous fan? is it catching on the radiator ducting. just check your fan for scrapes on the fins. keep it simple. you dont want to spend money before you 100% sure you know what the problem is.

checked the viscous fan thats fine............you really get turned to all this different noises these bloody vehicles make .....sounds different everyday.....im really "anal" about enjines !!
