BIFFYBOY
HI i have got a beautiful sxs 12g it was left to me by my dad, the thing is when ive bin out shooting it seems to be to short as i mount the gun its like im having to pull it into my shoulder before i take the shot i was wondering if you can have the stock lengthend or a thicker recoil pad fitted and what would the cost be its a really nice gun and a shame its not being used. cheers BIFFYBOY
steve_b_wales
To lengthen the stock on one of my rifles, so that I could use it with night vision, I used a slip on recoil sleeve, but placed a 50mm shaped piece of wood inside it before placing it on the stock. It did'nt look very good, but did the job.
Gordon R
It all depends how much you want to spend or whether you are doing it yourself. The stock lengthened in wood would cost a chunk. In vulcanite - about £15 for the vulcanite and then fitting. Recoil, pad - similar. As Steve has suggested - try a slip on pad and vary the length of the stock (better if you can borrow one) - I have used cardboard inserts - until you arrive at the correct length. Then go for something more permanent.
welshwarrior
I charge £40 plus the recoil pad or in walnut £100 plus the cost of the wood finished with a chequered butt PM me if you want to know more.
Gunman
How you do it will depend on how much you need to lengthen it .If its under an inch a solid silvers type pad will look OK and be in keeping any other pad will look awful . Over that use wood as a black ebonite pad will not look good either .Probably difficult to get a god match for an extension piece so go for colour match and grain density and it will look OK . welshwarrior
.Probably difficult to get a god match for an extension piece so go for colour match and grain density and it will look OK . There are 2 trains of thought here 1 get it as close as you can takes time to find the right piece of wood and you never get a match 2 use some wood of a higher grade that will show up get it done properly and let's say "yes I've had a stock extension but isn't it a good job". I prefer the later but it's an owners choice I see nothing wrong with showing off an extension shows you know a gun has to fit you not your dad. rwade545
http://www.kynochammunition.co.uk/silvers.html these are original silvers pads as fitted to all top end guns from around the turn of the century, mainly to african double rifles but also to some top end shot guns. They will extend the stock by about an inch which is what a lot of older guns need due to people being taller these days. Try holding the gun up with 2 fingers between stock and shoulder and that will give you idea of extension. They are about £35 delivered which compares to other pads and will look the part as opposed to cheap rubber ones you can find else where and be in keeping with an old gun. Best of luck getting it sorted.
straightshooter1
or you can give me a shout and tell me what you want done here is one I did recently unfinished but you get the idea: the wood on this one wasn't a perfect match but close enough for the owner or as said before you can have a longer recoil pad or an extention put in the choice is yours Edited June 11, 2013 by straightshooter1
