Is 14" Enough?

Had a bit of a PW day yesterday. Had the pleasure of meeting Tonker in the morning - hope I didn't get anyone in bother by suggesting he might like to pop into the Sportsman on the way home for a couple of bits - and went out to play with Jasper 3's toys in the afternoon - hence this.

I have an Anschutz 22LR carbine so no problem there, but was a little surprised to find that his HMR also has a 14" barrel. When we get a chance, we'll put it over the chrono but meanwhile can anyone who knows for sure please tell me if this length of barrel on this calibre will permit the advertised velocity for the round?

Cheers

22 inch = 2517 fps, 103 fps spread

21 inch = 2523 fps, 66 fps spread

20 inch = 2515 fps, 86 fps spread

19 inch = 2538 fps, 83 fps spread

18 inch = 2522 fps, 41 fps spread

17 inch = 2505 fps, 43 fps spread

16 inch = 2492 fps, 53 fps spread

15 inch = 2477 fps, 27 fps spread

14 inch = 2432 fps, 70 fps spread

13 inch = 2419 fps, 32 fps spread

12 inch = 2387 fps, 57 fps spread

11 inch = 2338 fps, 45 fps spread

10 inch = 2276 fps, 45 fps spread

i have /had both and didnt notice any loss in accuracy,if anything at all i thought the hmr had a bit more recoil to it compared to say a cz with a 16" barrel but that might just have been me,buy the way what is the 22 annie reading on the chrono

Thank you, everyone.

Have not chrono'd the Anschutz. Unlike the HMR, subsonic LR is not all about velocity. Slow down excessively the 17gns of the HMR which is totally reliant on velocity for effect and you have the ballistics akin to a pea shooter.

if anschutz and weirauch build 14 " i would think thats enough said.depending on which study you read some claim more speed at 15 than 18 etc as the powder is burned in a short time.accuracy will not be a problem and may enen be better you may lose a few fps you may not but either way the difference will be unoticable hunting.

Yep, but they both make/made the Mach 2 so perfection is not a given. Having said that, just had a look and the difference between the advertised figure and that supplied for the 14" and the difference is no more that 0.3" at both mid and 150 max range.

Just put a dozen rounds through the chrono. My 14" Weihrauch with 17 grn Winchesters averaged 2471 fps with 40 fps spread.

Winchester claim 2450 but don't say what barrel length. Need someone to put chrono some through a 20" barrel now. I have a feeling there ain't going to be a lot of difference.
