Hypa flaps for the first time

Recommended Posts

Well, I bought an aa rotory magnet a few weeks back, but even with dead birds it was difficult to get pigeons to come into the pattern , so after grovelling to the missus she said yes, bit like the man from delmonte, so I ordered a pair of the hypaflap decoys, they arrived this morning so by 2.30 I was setting up in a sugar beet field where plenty of birds have been hammering the young plants for the last two weeks, I tried to decoy them last thursday but they were having non of it, so after reading the instructions I set up the two on the arms of my aa magnet and let rip, the flapping action is so good, within minutes I had birds turning in from hundreds of yards away, I shot like a real plonker, but they kept coming, all afternoon in ones and twos, most were so close I was making a real mess of them, I ended with 11 and a jackdaw, but had I shot to my usual standard I would have had around 20, Ive been trying out some new cartridges , kent velocity fiber wad 6's, in 29 gram, and I keep shooting in front of the birds coming from left or right, coming in or flying away was no problem but the fast shot speed 1400 f/p/sec was really causing me problems, so finished with 12 for 28 cartridges, I think I need some more practice with these faster kents, but as to the hypaflaps, a big thumbs up, they really fooled the pigeons. :good::good:

Thanks for the review.

I've started using the Kent Velocity fibre 29g 6's too and I love 'em now.

I've been wondering whether to invest in a pair or not. Maybe I'll give them a go because I either forget to take deads out of the freezer or it's a last minute decision to go.

I can guarantee you were not missing due to the speed of the cartridges. If you think that, you will only miss more.

I cant think of any other reason for the missing or perhaps it was just a bad day, but the birds were definitley pulling up sharply as the shot went by in front of them, not a problem ive had before, we all get the odd bad day so it was probably just my over eagerness to pop the little so and so's, I am probably going through the bird a bit too fast , an old bloke once told me just swing through the bird, bum, belly beak bang and you cant go wrong, I have this notion that the farther away they are the more lead you give but I dont think its working too well,

You've just sold me on the hypaflaps are they easy to set up ? Ive been using the kents as well. I use the 28g 7.5 for clays so it just made sense for me to swap......... you don't miss 1g of shoot !!

Vinced, I didnt have any problem setting up, just a few minutes to get the wing flap right by bending the leading and trailing edge of the wings up slightly, also make sure they are flying level,I started with them slightly head down but found lifting the head slightly made them flap far better into the wind, at one time the wind picked up a bit so I fitted the extra wing spars supplied with them so they had 2 spars in place, this stiffened the wings , but as soon as the wind dropped I took out the second spar and they worked much better, but I think any moving decoy has problems in high winds, I think its more about getting used to new kit and getting the best from it, I will be out again over the weekend to try again, cant wait. :good:

With close in decoyed birds you are more than likely missing in front in other words way to much lead.Shoot them further out. mottys right not even superman could tell the difference btween the 1100 n 1600 fps cartridges.

Went out with TIGHTCHOKE today and had 2 Hypaflaps on a rotary over spring rape. It was the first time I'd ever seen them used and was amazed at how well they worked. As the battery ran out of power though they would only beat into wind. But apart from that they seemed fine and definitely worth it!

When I set mine up I deliberately set the speed so they just flap into the wind. In my head it imitates the bird going from a flap into a glide to land.

Brilliant bit of kit!!
