djgeoff
two days ago my mate and i spotted loads of pigeon over a group of wheat fields, so we made our way over there, mate was one side of field and myself directly opposite him, none of us were behind hides we just stood close into the bush line and none of us had decoys out. we did try decoys at first but it was quite apparent they were not decoying at all. the pigeon were just all over the place,i found it hard to keep track of which ones to go for, there were high ones, driven, left, right crosser's in fact every type of shot. via walkie talkie my mate and i were tipping each other the wink when birds were coming from behind . we started shooting at 6pm and stopped at 8.30pm and we had shot 180. we returned there again today, to have peak and they were back again, they were like locus, the sky was thick with them, so we decide to have another bash. unfortunately my mate had to stop at 40 pigeon after an hour as he has a recurring injury to his neck and with the constant shooting and looking / taking high quick moving birds he was in lot of pain, so he come come to sit in hedge line with me. today we started at approx 3pm finished at 5pm and i had shot 85. so in total of some 4.5 hours we shot 300 touch. i did not know how tiring shooting could be, i felt zapped but it was really good and some testing birds, today i pulled off 3 pairs shots and one triple. i was well happy and so was the farmer who had said shooters were a waste of time they scare more than they shoot, he was amazed how many we had got in such small amount of time. today i also had a huge buzzard virtually hover over top of me, what a fantastic sight, later a buzzard came up off the next field to my left some 50yds away and had great difficulty in gaining height, then i noticed a nice size bunny in his grip, it must have been a could heavy bunny, still nice to see though. JDog
That's better than one pigeon per minute over two and a half hours. What shooting that must have been.
pigeon controller
That's better than one pigeon per minute over two and a half hours. What shooting that must have been. Did your barrels melt in the heat, how did you cope with three hundred birds in that heat ie freezers on overload??

djgeoff
Yep barrels were getting quite hot,i stopped holding gun by barrel while waiting for next quarry, had too keep checking choke as well, worked lose twice.well as too the dead ones, on advise of mate who has the permission we collected what we could that fell near but most of them we had to leave in crop which was a dam Shame.he said we would do more damaged than what the pigeons may do.he also said this is where a dog would be handy.i was concerned over my empty carts from my auto too,as i like to clear up after myself, but picked up what i could find without smashing crop about to muchMate said we will return when combined and do a bit of clearing up then, farmer won't be happy us smashing his crop down Edited July 31, 2013 by djgeoff

oowee
I was in a wheat field this week ( its about 3 weeks from ripe) and the rooks had knocked down a patch in the centre, which was being attacked by both rooks and pigeon. I tried to decoy from the field edge but the birds were coming in about 70 metre's out. After numerous long range shots and only two birds in the bag (can't remember the number of shots ) I decided to set up the hide in the patch of broken wheat in the centre. I made the hide into a 1m square box which stood out like a sore thumb in the 1m high stalks, and thought I would have no chance but it worked like a dream until the heavens opened.
