Well then people, been thinking about my semi auto which is fitted with fixed skeet chokes. Its only a knock around gun and isnt worth alot but i always shoot well with it and have hardly missed anything with it.

Was considerin keeping it as a work gun. What do you guys think is the max killing range on it using 32g No6 shot for pigeons/crows etc. No stupid answers please.

Cheers :good:

I use a gun that is choked improved cylinder and quarter choke and regularly kill pheasants and pigeons etc out to 40 yards, this is with 30 gm fibre wad loads of No 6 shot. I believe this combination could be successful a bit further out, say to 45 yards, but it's rare for me to shoot at that range and realistically most shots are taken between the 25 to 35 yard range.

With the bigger load and maybe with plastic wads I see no reason why your gun would not be capable of doing the same.

As many of the birds you'll shoot when decoying are well within say 40yd range then I can't see you having a problem. I almost always use open chokes when decoying Woody. Might add a bit when flighting them into roost.

Why not pattern test your gun with a variety of cartridges and see which work best at set ranges?

I didn't know you could shoot that far out with such an open choke! I'm not questioning it, as I'm too new to the shotgun scene, but I always thought that it would be about 25 yards max. You learn something new every day on here :)

its not the distance thats in question the velocity will be the same ( yes you will have a degree of bleed off in speed but negligable to you or i),its the pattern that suffers the further out you target, all them hole's can make for a risky kill, run some patterns with your gun mate, its the only sure way of seeing and beleiving, if we have time i'll help you out at mendip.
