JDog
I had a call from the farmer this morning. This was where I had a look yesterday and was disappointed at all of the works going on (why does farming have to get in the way of pigeon shooting?). He had not been able to spray and wouldn't be able to do it today so the field was free for me to shoot. When I got there there were a few on. However I told myself not to rush in but to sit in the car and watch which I did for an hour! One thing was immediately apparent and that was incoming birds made no effort whatsoever to join those on the ground. They even over-flew them and landed randomly around the field. I knew that this meant trouble. I set up on the best of three weak flight lines in and put out the rotary and six dead birds. This made not a jot of difference and incoming birds sailed over the pattern to land elsewhere in the field. I took the rotary down and the same thing happened. Of course I shouldn't have been surprized as I had seen this behaviour whilst I was observing. In the first hour I shot 8, in the second hour I shot 10 and I was about to call it a day when I shot a very long carrion crow. I propped it up and corvids came in straight away. Not a lot but enough to keep me there for a bit longer. In the third hour pigeons flighted closer to my hide position and I was able to get a few and then a return line then opened up. I won't say that I didn't deserve such a treat but I was lucky as I have never seen this line before. The line was across the field I was shooting and the field behind. The lowest bird would have been 30m up and the highest probably 70m high. Those hot shots on PW may have had a field day but some were just too high or too far for my limited abilities. Of the 62 pigeons I picked no more than a dozen decoyed. Of the 17 corvids I picked all of them decoyed. The pigeons were full of rape seed. Below is a shot of my hide position in the shade of a tree. It wouldn't have mattered how well hidden my hide was I do not believe that I would have had any more success decoying pigeons in that particular field into the pattern. aga man
a good report JDog many similarities to my day yesterday. sounds like you made the best of the situation and managed a good bag. nice to get a few corvids aswell, especially of the carrion flavour. amazing to see how much rapeseed the woodies can hold in there crop. fenboy
Thats hurting my neck , no wonder they would not commit with putting the decoys vertically and shooting laying on your side . Can I suggest you try this pattern next time . Edited September 5, 2013 by fenboy
JDog
Thanks, but I find that my hide is better on it's side. I have to lie down too which is why I shoot so badly. It was a very steep field. No matter how I arrange my pictures in photobucket they always come out on their side! Strange. pigeon controller
Great result, I like a hide in the shade as you can move with ease as they do not seem to pick up on you.
