Harnser
About a week ago I saw three herons in the middle of 150 acre rape stubble field . What were they doing ? after mice or shrews maybe . One looked like a male bird and the other two looked like females .I always thought that herons were solitary birds .Never seen this before . Two days ago on another rape field I saw a CWD walking across the rape stubble feeding away to its hearts content ,when suddenly a buzzard dived onto it . The CWD started to run across the field with the buzzard swooping and diving at it untill the deer ran into some woodland . Surely a buzzard wouldnt be able to take a small deer ?. Harnser . sako751sg
Nay unusual to see a few herons together and have always presumed its parents and weans together.Dont think ive seen in rape but have in other stibble and the mice could be a good shout as to the reason. JDog
Mice and voles killed by the combine would be easy pickings for the herons. As for the CDW I doubt whether a buzzard could take one. Just flexing it's muscles possibly.

Just flexing it's muscles possibly. a fair asumption i would say. buzzards are very territorial so was probably telling the CWD to do one. as for the herons i have also seen them swallowing large rats on stubbles. KFC
Being a Chinese Water Deer perhaps the Buzzard fancied a takeaway for a change

Cranfield
I have seen quite a few adult herons on the stubbles with one or two adolescents in tow, I have also assumed they are looking for combine fatalities. We have Marsh harriers that will dive bomb the sheep occasionally, they just seem to do it because they can.
