Mr pigeon
Right! Just bought 90 partridge for our little shoot, 30 in each of the three pens. Is there any tips or tricks to them or so you drive / flush them the same as pheasants? Any suggestions or tips would be great! Cheers
scotslad
Will vastly depend on ur terrian and how ur drives are set up as well as wind. I take it pens are situated in a pheasant cover crop. So u will probably won't be able to do much that different anyway and just beat the pheasants as usual and hope that works for the partridge too and the wind suits. Possibly a few extra flag men on flanks might help? but it also might make no difference Do u not know anyone that can come out a look at the land in question and give u a bit off advice, would same advice off someone who can actually see the lie of land will always be worth more than blind advice of the net
al4x
Blank in as much ground before the cover as you can and make sure the guns get on peg very quietly. They are the basics after that partridges usually go where they want so we usually have a walking gun or two as well. They are good sport but it takes a while to learn what they do on most ground
Dunkield
They are a lot spookier than pheasants, so as Alex says keep your guns and beaters quite until you are all set, it only takes one crack of the flag and they can be gone. matone
They usually flush earlier than pheasants in cover crops which makes for a bit longer drive. As others have said ,guns need to be quiet,so stamp on their dog whistles and buy enough ball gags !(nothing else will work).
malantone
partridge will flush at the sound of a squeaky gate, I get the impression you might have these pens in the wood? if so we tried some a few years ago, total failure, they left the wood for the surrounding fields more or less right away
Mr pigeon
No pens are in either maize/millet cover crop or in asparagus fern. Both on top of hills. They form part of a pheasant drive, just there to see how we go with them before committing to much the idea. If they go well we will add some into the shoot permanently. Not sure of returns but hopefully good fun!
matone
If possible drive them down a hedgeline toward the guns,it helps get them to the guns .
