Tomcantwell
Treetops Newport have several stands that involve peppering power lines. Apparently doesn't damage them!
12boreblue
When I was a very young lad, a family friend let me have a go of his .410, there was a crow perched on a lampost, he told me to aim and shoot at the crow, you can quess what a mess was made, dead crow, smashed glass all over the road. Never seen a man run so fast... strangley never heard another word about it. Next week lamp all repaired! Try a catapult!!!!
norfolk dumpling
Having been on two shoots where power/phone lines were damaged and all the ensuing 'brown stuff' I'm now slightly paranoid when ever I get a peg with wires within 100yds. This has happened twice recently with heavy duty pylons/cables - the other guns ignored them and shot as if they were not there. I had to move back and take shots overhead to overcome my aversion. K Mac
Quite a few folks are saying this lad should not have his FAC but do not know the land he shoots on. I can shoot jackdaws out of tree tops on my land. The same folks would say the same about me. But their is a 800ft pile of earth behind the trees and 2000 black faced sheep that run as soon as someone gets within 100 meters of them. Why they can not answer the with out ripping into him ? So there are trees and a large earth bank behind them and you can be absolutely certain that nobody has sneaked in there somewhere and pitched a tent or picnic can you? If there is the slightest doubt (and if you can't see clearly through the trees, or guarantee the round isn't going over the bank, I'd say there was doubt) then in my book that is an unsafe shot. K Mac
Large earth bank it's a 800 foot hill and yes we would know if someone was on the land this is not Sussex
K Mac
Again you are in Sussex and not in my location you have never seen it this is what I am talking about people committing about land they have never seen
Gimlet
Again you are in Sussex and not in my location you have never seen it this is what I am talking about people committing about land they have never seen And you're right. This happens all the time. Its utterly pointless pontificating over whether a shot on someone else's ground you have never seen is or is not safe. But people like to try. The thread is about overhead lines and whether shot-strike can damage them. The concensus is yes, probably, so don't do it. The end.
-Mongrel-
If you want to take that tack, none of us have seen the original posters land and therefore nobody is in a position to comment. End of thread. Good night. Edited September 28, 2013 by -Mongrel-
Gee.
Spent 6 hours this morning on the side of a steep mountain trying to find a fault on a 20 pair telephone cable. Took an age to overland all the tools/ladders and gear needed to check it as there was no vehicular access...... made worse by the fact the weather wasn't great. No obvious signs of damage until closer inspection revealed that it was peppered with shot. One shot means that the whole 120m needs to be replaced. Hope the bird the idiot shot off the top of it was worth it as hes taken out at least 7 voice lines, 2 data lines and a few alarm lines. The customers will be out of service for a while until the cable gets replaced (took a month the last time it happened). Will cost a hell of a lot of money and manpower. People don't realise how important telephone lines are to people living rural who rely on them to call the emergency services for help etc.
rimfire4969
As a kid I shot many birds off power lines with an air rifle never had any problems, but don't think I would do it with an fac. On our pheasant shoot we have one drive that's called pylons for obvious reasons we do try and avoid the power lines but they do get peppered every season, if they were phone cables I guess we would have to move our pegs. 12boreblue
So the consensus is do not shoot fireams at either power or telephone lines, can we now end this thread, I think it's reached it's conclusion now!
