nabbers
What Bedding is best for 2 labs in a 6x4 isulated wood kennel with hatch into a galvanised run? Currently using bean bags, but wondering about creating a sleeping compartment to keep them warmer in winter, I now live on a hill. \what about hay/straw? kennett
From what I have seen, straw gets damp, mouldy and is perfect for all sorts of creepy crawlies to live in. Im building my kennel at the moment and im using polystyrene insulation and ply with rubber stable mat on top. Going to give them a few old towels so they have something to scrap about and these can be clean and dry after a short blast in the washing machine
ditchman
i have used for many years "dust extracted shavings"....about 10"in deep during winter...they love it....and it has a antiseptic quality (natural) to it.........

steve0146
I tried dust extracted shaving last year. My lab started losing hair in big clumps. I thought it was food related, so didnt change bedding. After a month, she had large bald patches along her back. As it was getting warmer anyway, she went back to old blankets and the hair loss stopped straight away and the hair grew back. She obviously had some sort of reaction to the shavings. 955i
My dogs current bed (although inside) is a 4x3 gym mat and its the best thing I have ever used. Waterproof, easy to clean and insulated due to being 2" thick foam inside. May be worth considering. There are many used ones on the bay and a quick search found a 4'x6' one that is currently at £6! ayano3
I use shredded medical type paper. Its the same as in horse stables and is very similar to that J cloth stuff the Mrs has. It's about £20 a bale that is very compact. One bale lasts almost a year. Its warm, absorbent if the dogs still damp. The dog likes shifting it about and buries herself in it when its cold. I use a smaller amount in summer and she has the chance to sleep on top of the box in the kennel/run. I have tried almost everything else and nothing in my opinion betters this.
