ROY
Work is very slow at the moment and is starting to get me down so felt i needed to take me mind of things for a few hours. Decided to dig out the old fly fishing gear and try a local stillwater i had been meaning to try for ages. Arrived at lake around 9ish got me 2 fish ticket thinking with my fly casting inability and general lack of knowledge would mean a fruitless yet fun morning tharshing the water to foam. There was plenty of fish jumping and i had noticed a couple of dead daddy long legs laying on the floor so stuck a fly of this ilk to my leader. First cast usual story most of the line in a bunch about 10 yards out. Tried a few more casts and things started to improve, not a lot but enough to present the fly with reasonable success. Thought 10 minutes if thrashing about was enough to scare most of the fish out of that swim so moved a couple round. Next swim a nice Rainbow was cruising about 5 yrd or so out and a couple of foot down. Thought its gotta be worth a go couple of false casts and out me line goes to land sort of straight above the fish with a lot of splash oops. Didnt seem to bother the fish and i slowly dragged the slowly sinking ddl past its nose which it promptly ignored. Second cast same thing but this time it went for it. 10 mins later a nice 3lb rainbow sat on the bank wich was quickly despatched with a large screwdriver handle on the back of the head (couldnt find me priest this morning). Feeling rather chuffed i moved a few platforms round and reapeated the process and low and behold after a 5 minute fight with a couple jumps (the fish not me) a nice 2 1/2 lber graced the bank. All in all a bloody good morning but after expecting to spend most of the day waving me rod about i was in and out in under an hour. Dunkield
I have always thought presentation is more important than distance when casting, you have proved you don't need to cat to the horizon to catch. Two nice, fully finned trout there, well done.
