Cranfield
Try putting a plain piece of A4, or A3 paper on the "big cardboard box" and mark an oval on it, about the same size as a pigeon. Pace out 30 yards and fire one shot only, having aimed for the middle of the oval. This will show you how many pellets are in the target area and how many could have hit vital spots on the bird. But at 40-45 yards and see what occurs LB

Lancs Lad
thought the purpose of checking your "fit" was to do it at close range to make sure that it was going in the place where you are aiming at. Know that when you move futher back, it spreads more and more.

Dead-Eyed Duck
Am I right in saying that at close range the shot pattern should be high? To allow for this I was always told to aim at a rabbits feet at 20 yards to ensure that it hit it in the chest. Don
