Acorns Rule

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share a great afternoon's sport with you. A mate and I have shared the shooting rights on a 60acre mixed fruit orchard for the last 20 odd years. It has provided us with some fantastic rabbit shooting during that time, in good years a winter's evening lamping using 22RF would yield bags anywhere between 40- 80 prime bunnies. BUT the real trick up this little shoot's sleeve is the fact that it's broken up into 5 smaller fields which are all lined with oak trees. In good acorn years such as this one, when all the cards fall right it can provide some truly outstanding pigeon shooting, as indeed it did today.

As others have found around the country this autumn has been bloody hard work where big bags of pigeon have been concerned. Amongst several bags ranging between 30-60, I've only broken the 'ton' on two occasions when the bag was 110,137 both taken over wheat stubble.

So it was with baited breath that I drove into the lane leading to this little sporting paradise in the hope of finding that the birds were 'on' the acorns, andin good numbers. I needn't have worried as my prescence put some 4-600 birds up off the ground and out of the oaks!

With the adrenalin now flowing (even after 30 odd years these marvellous birds still have this affect on me) I phoned my mate to tell him that we were 'on' and to get his **** down here. Exactly 47 mins from making the call we were in our hide, coys out and ready to do battle. They didn't return as well as other years, but those that did, offered us some extremely testing shots in the near galeforce wind. At times, 40 odd yds high birds, when cleanly killed, were 'whipped' away far down wind, to land in a cloud of feathers 70-80 yds away. My 18mth old yellow lab was all 'eyes and ears' as he witnessed these potential retrieves.

Then all too soon it was over. We drew stumps at 3.45 as another terrific squall looked imminent. Final bag was 87 woodies and 3 carrion crows. We didn't beat the rain, but we didn't care and returned to our homes soaked but smiling!

So it's now out to my shed to breast out all 87. Hopefully my photo has appeared as intended (with lots of help from my 13yr old daughter)

Regards Remmyman

ps comp telling me 'file too big upload' will try to send seperately!

Brilliant result, I have a number of farms with a great many oaks and I hope they start soon. What a great day but it ended like mine yesterday with a soaking. You say you have an orchard which produces mega bunnies and oaks which produce great pigeon shooting. I have the same , I ferret the bunnies and shoot the pigeon on the oaks as well as on the blossom in the spring. Again a great day for you.

Cheers pc, I'm sure that all of us have their own 'special place' as regards somewhere that you can always rely on to offer a shot along with it having that special 'feel'. If i had to choose somewhere to spend my last day on earth, this orchard would be it. It is an oasis amongst thousands of acres of arable prairies,a place that 'time forgot'

REGARDS REMMYMAN
