SPRINGER PROBLEM

Having a problem with 1 of my springers. She is 2 year old and has all of a sudden become very possessive with the dummy, ball, apple or any other thing a dog might retrieve. The problem only occurs when either of my other 2 springers are present ! She will pick something up and then drop it in front of her or even just go and lay down next to the ball or dummy etc and when 1 of my other dogs come near the gums are up and she starts acting all hard. If they try and take the ball she snacks at them which in the pups case results in the pup legging it and in the older dogs case a full blown barny takes place.

This is all the more weird as when i take her beating by herself she is a really good grafter, she will quarter face any cover retrieve on land and water and does this in the presence of about 8 other dogs without paying any notice of them or is bothered if 1 of them gets the retrieve just before her ?

Any ideas on what i can do about this apart from rehome her with someone who does not have any other dogs ?

Dont really understand why you are training a dog, at least that's what it sounds like your doing, and letting other dogs go near her when she has the dummy/ ball.

If you are just letting the dogs play with ball/ dummys together you always get a dominant dog.

Why think about rehoming the dog when you are causing the problem :/

This all sounds a little mad, do you intend to work your dog on a so called shoot were its a case of first there gets it? I shouldn't. Its up to you to prevent this sort of possessive thing- not complain coz it happens. You want to know how to get two dogs to fight? put them together with one juicy bone in a small space without exits. You are only a small step away from that one.

Engineer the situation so it does not happen, don't blame the dog when it does please think about it

Thanks for a completely useless response !

I wish i could work her on your imaginery shoot where the dogs in the beating line politely wait and take it in turns if a bird lands in front of them.

I would expect a fight if i chucked a bone in between 2 dogs you muppet i dont expect a fight to break out if 1 of my dogs picks up a windfall apple while taking them for a walk !!

If you have not got a sensible answer......jog on.

I do sometimes train the dogs together when i try and get 1 to retrieve and the other to stay, nowt wrong with that i dont think. I did think the middle dog was trying to stake her claim but after 10 bouts and 10 losses i am not so sure

I do not let them "play" with the dummy,it is only used for retrieving training. As for me causing the problem, please explain how ? surely it should be possible to work more than 1 dog at a time :/

The responses from Actionpigeons and Kent were spot on, not 'useless'. You are causing the problem and to consider rehoming before you have really attempted to sort the problem out is weak.

How am i causing the problem ?

Ok. there is nothing wrong in training dogs together, that is if you can sit the other dogs while you are training one.

however you said:

"when 1 of my other dogs come near the gums are up and she starts acting all hard"

This in plane English says that you are letting the other dog/dogs go near the dog while she has the dummy /ball. That is how YOU are causing the problem.

If I have a problem with a young dog retrieving I let it watch an older dog retrieve from a sit or even ask my mrs to come along and hold the problem dog on a lead.

I would never let a second dog run in on a dogs retrieve.

Sorry if you don't understand this it may well be the best thing for the dog to re-home it.

Maybe i did not explain it correctly.

I do sit my other 2 on the couple of occasions i have tried a retrieve with the dog in question. The problem then has been that she has not retrived the dummy and just lay next to it. The vast majority of times she is doing this with something she just randomly picks up like and apple, stick, leaf, rock or insert anything you want. Yes in an ideal world i could get someone to hold both the other dogs as i take the item off the dog but that is not practical.

So like i said, if i take my dogs for a walk and 1 of them decides to start a fight over a leaf how am i causing that ?

I have had working dogs for over 30 year so i do have a little bit of an idea of what i am doing but have never come accross this before hence me asking for ideas

Well thats not what the OP said. :/

If you have been working dogs for 30 years as you say, and have control over your dogs, keep the other dogs at heel while the problem dog has a run.

Avoiding the situation is better than having a problem.

While training don't ask the problem dog to retrieve towards the other dogs, this may stop her feeling she is bringing the dummy back to the other dogs.

And I have been working dogs for over 40 years and this is just common dog scenes

have fun

I know what you mean about retrieving towards the other two and like i say she works very well if she is on her own hence why i was thinking about rehoming her with someone who didnt have any other dogs because it would be a shame to waste her working ability just because she has a hump with my other dogs.

This is a problem that has recently occurred and she does not do it with game but it is becoming a problem hence asking if any one else has had it, as i would like to keep her if anyone else has found a routine that works to stop this.
