Fitting terrier at the emergency vets again - owner (me) a big girl

I thought we had cracked the problem with my border - he has been on Epiphen for the last year an until tonight had only had 3 minor 5 minute fits.

He is fitting now and has been for the last hour - at the vets now and I am such a big girl I hate it and I feel sick.

They have suggested leaving him in over night but I can't bring myself to leave my best mate here so I am going to sit it out and hope he comes around soon - when he does he is back to normal very quickly.

He is due a blood test this week so I am hoping it is just that the Epiphen has dropped below the therapeutic level as I know he was at the bottom end last time so hopefully we can get rid of the problem by increasing the dose slightly. Doesn't help me feel any better now though.

Thank you.

It's ridiculous that my little 12kg terrier can reduce me a 6ft 15stone (overweight) grown man to nausea and close to tears.

I'm really impressed with the young female vet - she had put a line in and he has had some more diazepam which hasn't done the job so he is now zonked out in phenobarbitol...so he has stopped fitting at least.

Apparently he is sleepy but keeps trying to lick his balls so my mate is gonna be ok soon!

He's home now, had a huge drink and a small bowl of grub and has just brought me his tug of war rope...one happy owner!

I just realised as well he has added 500g of muscle which would also have dropped the level of his meds so hopefully we can up them on Monday and will have very few minor seizures in the future.

Canine epilepsy is horrible, especially for big hairy dog owners!

Its an awful condition I hope he's fine soon.

We had a white GS which started fits when he watched the flashing Christmas lights, he had to be put down in the January. Still reminds me when Christmas lights start appearing - must be all of 13 years ago.

Seems to be a problem which intensifies through in or close-breeding, but sometimes its just bad luck.

Glad you've got him home and hope the meds keep him on an even keel. The Border has very few inherent medical problems but unfortunately fitting is a problem in the breed. My family have been involved with Borders since the 1930's and through the generations have had a number who have had fits, non too serious , but it is distressing . I hope all goes well as they are terrific dogs.

Cheers chaps, I am confident we will sort it upping his meds a little as they have been working brilliantly - I seriously considered shooting him myself about 18months ago during a fit to stop him being in pain - because they are partial seizures he is conscious which I think makes it worse as he is in pain and cries and tries to get to me.

He is trying to get me to play ball now and I have a stiff drink so we are both a lot more relaxed lol!

I do not know why we ever have dogs. When they are ill we worry, and when they die we grieve. Your post shows how much you care about your Border. Knowing the breed I doubt whether he cares as much about you. Mine certainly doesn't.

I reckon he does actually - as borders go he is especially affectionate and well behaved, but still wants to kill every small furry thing (of larger furry things if he was allowed lol!).

Vets booked for Monday so hopefully will be sorted.
