Cree Torch

Bought the Cree HS-802 [red LED] as per the link below and have to say I'm not that impressed. It's just ok if conditions are pitch black and is not up to much if there is any sort of brightness about. I was expecting [maybe wrongly] a bit more from this torch, given what I have read about it. It was only just over twenty quid so it's not the end of the world - just wondering is there anything I can add to it to give it a bit more range. At present I would say it is only effective to 50 yards max - I have another quite basic Cree [albeit white LED] that is good to 60-70 yards.

I've got a red and a green 200lumen torch and can sit shooting rabbits at 100yrds admittedly they've been fitted the deal extreme version of DaveG's kit but even without the kit wasn't far off that. I would say all the kits done is direct the light so there's not as much spill, it's not gained any distance just made the existing light more usable.

I'd expect more than 70yrds from 300lumen even as a standard unit.

It's not your fault in any way sirgoldalot - I paid my money and took a chance as with all of these type of purchases - sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't! I was just wondering if I can do anything with it to give it a bit more grunt.

I have three ( 2 x smaller cree @ £5.99 ) and these two are superb for the money. The one in the link above I have ordered and it arrived yesterday so I have not tried it out yet.

I am only planning on fixing them to my shotgun/air rifle to no real distance issues for me.

There's been enough lamping torch info posted on this forum to the point of it's got boring but still people buy reflectored torches that are great for walkers but tat for hunters because the spill affects night adjust eyes.

I'm going to risk upsetting forum etiquette to copy and paste the text of one of my ebay listings I've just started using rather than type it all out again:

These are no ordinary 501b torches and illuminators -
they are 'some blokes' 501B shooting torches and illuminators. :-)

Haha, 'some bloke' is the sign in name I use on some shooting forums.

The red torch conversion in this listing is much too bright for air rifle ranges and will scare close quarry away, check out my more moderate power listing for air rifle lamping... but if you feel you must use more light than you need then carry on (-:

If you have a torch with a flat glass lens and a reflector you will never begin to imagine the hunting performance improvements of a custom built or modified lens torch.

If you buy a flat lens torch for night hunting you will probably save some money but you will be buying a disadvantage. If you can't see the lens it might have been deliberately kept out of the picture.

An ordinary torch reflector provides a spill of moderate light around a fairly bright central beam. That basically suits ordinary people who might want to see what they are going to step on or in when out in the dark.

The night hunter will have developed his 'night adjusted eyesight' while in the dark and the last thing he needs is any stray light bouncing back from foliage or even dust or moisture in the atmosphere: As he turns on a reflectored torch local light spill will cause his pupil iris's to close quite sharply so he sees less distance and squints to varying degrees.

By removing the reflector we can stop that spilt light - and put some of it back into the main column of light and concentrate it in a forwards direction by using an aspheric collimating lens. The bespoke Ahorton aspheric lens fitted, in conjunction with a correct length focal spacer instead of a reflector totally transforms these otherwise quite mundane torches.

The night hunter (and his Night Vision Device if he is using one) will therefore be able to see things much further away better and much more comfortably.

Unfortunately the better hunters torches with their specialist components are not a mainstream item made by the million in some Chinese factory. Someone somewhere in the west with much higher costs of living has to make them in small numbers so they cost more.

I am a night hunter and have learned the specific needs of the hunter rather than the walker. I can supply these with LED's to suit your specific needs within rimfire ranges.

If you buy the item you must send me a message saying if you want it for red light lamping or night vision hunting. If it is to be used for NV you need to tell me if it is going to be used for the Yukon Photon or N550/N770 because they need much less illumination than rear add on type rigs so I can supply a moderate power illuminator for those.

Do not make the mistake of buying a high power Ir illuminator for those rigs if you shoot at low ranges because they can wash out the image quality, I sell quite a few moderate power Ir illuminators to people who thought high power ones were the best for it.

Google 'Tapetum lucidum' to learn how if you can see eyeshine, those eyes have seen your torch better. How any creature you get eyeshine from re-acts to it depends on any previous experience it may had had with that sort of light source and what other information it can detect. Rest assured if the quarry sits and/or stares at you then it is aware of your presence - it might even be thanking you for telling it you are there. (-:

This is one of the most versatile night hunter torch conversions available because the LED module can be swapped over in seconds for a different colour one in a cold dark field with no tools or other light needed. Little wonder that there are so many varieties of P60 style torches made. I can supply the modules separately if you email me at> davidgeorge69@btinternet.com <

You may ask me questions about individual parts and I can list them if requested for a decisive buyer.

What you get is an Ultrafire 501B torch with either:

  • A red LED module for rimfire range lamping.
  • A low power infra red illuminator drop in module for the Photon type rigs OR a higher power drop-in module for rear add-on type rigs.
  • And an Ahorton lens

I recycle packaging and will not export - nor supply to anyone with less than 98% feedback over at least 20 meaningful items. In my book there is no smoke without fire, and yes I am a straight speaking kind of bloke.

Search on youtube for this video, and also look at my other videos there :-)

There are also bigger longer range torches available from other members of this forum.
