mrmints
What was proving to be another rubbish Monday has been turned around with the green light from the Mrs! I can get a dog as long as it arrives house trained. She also dead against kennels, so I need to figure out how to make sure it bonds with me not her (given that she is at home all day with it), unlike the staffy which is her dog through and through!! Any tips, always appreciated!!
hedd-wyn
Nice one Likewise Mrs Wyn took a bit of persuading now the pup is 8 months old it's now part of the family. I wouldn't worry about the bond, the more time you spend with it the stronger the bond will get. I take mine out every evening for training/walk and for a short stroll in the morning before work. We also have a staffy that the Mrs believes to be hers but will only listen to me unfortunately. Good luck to you with it. ps what breed are you going for? Colc08
A dogs loyalty will always lie with he who gives him his freedom. ie if you are the one who walks/trains/exercises him then you'll have no problems. Col
silver pigeon 3
Well done mate, i will keep an ear to the ground! What breed have you decided on?
mrmints
It's a very tough call, but I think given my current shooting circumstance, a springer is the better option for me. I'll just have to get a lab a bit later! I also think a bitch for my first gun dog.

pigeon-hunter
There must be something in the water, my missis has done the same, we went for a black lab dog which comes home on the 30th. Was looking at a springer but my mates springer put me off

kent
What was proving to be another rubbish Monday has been turned around with the green light from the Mrs! I can get a dog as long as it arrives house trained. She also dead against kennels, so I need to figure out how to make sure it bonds with me not her (given that she is at home all day with it), unlike the staffy which is her dog through and through!! Any tips, always appreciated!! If you want a dog to truly bond with you, walk it on and off lead time and give it the training. One thing its got very little to do with is food. Its my experience that male dogs will always form a sort of bond with the top ranking female human in the house but its a different sort of bond to that it forms with the boss. I think it might have a little to do with the theory that guys do better with bitches and the girls do better with dogs, I swapped from handling bitches to dogs two animals ago as I now prefer a stronger dog mentally and physically and they do handle different, though don't forget a bitch might help some I don't fully subscribe to all that pack theory, all dogs know the difference between us and them but they certainly go with rank and also tasks within the family unit. For instance my eldest daughter is the only person in the household that can groom without using a lead etc outdoors in the open (mainly because she does it the most) and my youngest is very much the protected one. If your wife is the leader of your household and the other dog, walks them the most - she will be the boss. Don't bother with stopping her, the dog will still work for you- just except it might start delivering retrieves to her when you send it out I tried holding dogs back from other people in the house and other dogs, its not a great policy and can backfire in so many ways so take a more positive, proactive stance and get out with them more
scotslad
The only thing i'd say is pick ur lines right esp with a spaniel, personanlly i'd stay clear of anything with a lot of FTCH's in recent pedigree and also anything with a lot white all over body, generally another sign off recent FT lines. I would far rather have a pup just bred within working dogs that compliment each other, rather than an average (or even poor bitch) put to the local/most fashionable FTCH stud around I like my dogs to be proper old fashioned looking dogs and the look of the newer FT bred dogs do nothing for me, infact i think there ugly, also the way there bred now is very specialised for trialing and possibly not so suited to working and esp not with a novice handler. Depending on ur type off shooting u do, but a kennel is actually far better for a working dog even if only for sleeping at nite, imagine being a dog sleepiing in a nice warm house at 20+ degrees over nite then being sent into a cold pond at first light, at least in kennel will have a better coat. Think everyone else is right if ur the one giving the dog all the enjoyable stuff training, hunting and eventually shooting u will always be the favourite Just remeber with a bitch it will come in season possibly twice a year so u can't take ur dog to shoots, don't think a massive difference between dogs and bitches character now, dogs are far softer and more 'bitch like' than they used to be
mrmints
I've only just seen all of the responses to this! Must click subscribe! I've found a potential bitch springer now in Housty Kennels Swansea. Picked one that visually appeals from photos, but going to see them at the end of the month and will pick which ever one is available that gives me a good feeling. As per the agreement with the Mrs, I'm paying a bit extra for them to keep the dog a bit longer (works well for me as I have a massive deadline in March after which I can devote some quality time) until middle of March. I'll still pop along and see her as often as I can/am allowed! I will almost certainly spay her, so I won't be concerned about the season problems. A mate is knocking up the kennel as we speak!
