rimfire4969
I unfortunately know nothing about keeping over there, but what a great chance in life. Good luck to you.
FalconFN
The only thing I know about NZ is they like to go 'pig-sticking'...... Might be worth looking up gun laws and the NZ equivalent of BASC for the rules and regs, and any useful links. Beautiful country, good luck with the job. scotslad
Unfortunately can;t help u that much. Been lucky enough to go out there twice and managed a bit of hunting both times, my next trip will a a pure hunting trip. Amazing place, love there hunting too A lot of NZ id DOC land which is government owned and is pretty much free to roam about with a rifle shooting any deer species u can, there is areas of DOC land that u can shoot birds but far more controlled and strict seasons. (All mamals are introduced so alien, so viewed as pests, thats why the ducks/birds are more protected) On private land i'm not entirely sure how they work it, from wot i can gather i don't think there allowed to release game birds (may be wrong thou) but i know they have some massive fenced areas where they have some very large trophy animals usually for the americans to come across to make a coat rack My old headkeepers mate from sparsholt got a job out there must be 30 odd year ago now and the stories i heard about it dinae really tally with wot i know now? Whereabouts is the job, roughly? Still got a few mates out there who hunt a bit. But hunting is more rifle or dog work (pig hunting/sticking) althou met a few boys in a DOC hut 1 nite who shoot quail over hpr's,

Don't they have a single mammal species that was originally a native?
scotslad
I stand to be corrected, but 99% sure all the nieches where u would expect mammals to fill it where replaced by birds. Most are now extinct some where big ostrich type birds or even bigger. (Possibly there are some small rodents but as far as i beleve all birds) All the stuff we have introduced is decimating the native birds as most just nest on ground The DOC routinely drop posoned bait (1080 amongst other things) out of helicopters over massive areas to try and control the possums but it kills anything that eats it, deer pg and sometimes farm animals. Possibly try the fish hunt forum i think it's called for NZ, mibee dinae say u've applied for a job might not be happy with a foriegner coming over, pretty loyal bunch, but great craic

I completed my interview and have been offered the position so just rounding up as much information i can so its not a (complete) culture shock when i get over there! scotslad
Well done and congrats, very very very jealous!!!!! Absolutely cracking coutry, been lucky enough to been over twice now (used to flat wi a load of kiwi's who then travelled to uk) great bunch of folk, really love a bevy . U'll be very lucky culture wise as atleast they speak english sort off, but i'm scottish so can hardly accuse anyone of not speaking 'proper english'. U'll have to get used to some truely s **t beer and lager thou, and i hope u dinae drink guiness as it costs a fortune. I was surprised how dear the country has got in last 10 years used to be cheap as chips (plus getting over 3 kiwi dollar to pound ) dropped a lot now Unfortunately got no idea wot the score is with releasing pheasants is, i actually thought they didn't allow it, but i must off been wrong, as it must be allowed (hence ur job and that post above) don't think there is a massive ammount of vermin out there, never noticed as much ariel vermin anyway, althou think quite a lot of stoats as DOC have a lot off full time trapping teams on stoats and ferrets A lot of the boys are right nto there rifle hunting or 'pigging' as it's free over massive areas U will have a ball out there, only downside is it is sooooooo far away, got to love the 24hr flight I'd check that fish hunt? forum will probably get a decent feel for it Edited November 30, 2013 by scotslad
